The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Details show extent of terror plot against U.S.
Full Story

We now know more about an alleged attack that triggered an increased national threat level last summer.

That's when U.S. officials said they had uncovered a plot targeting financial institutions. The plot involved bombs, banks and British nationals.

The detail was startling, the targets enormous. They included financial buildings in Washington, New York and New Jersey.

Computer virus spews right-wing German spam

NEW YORK (Dow Jones/AP) — A computer virus spewed neo-Nazi-tinged spam in English and German into inboxes over the weekend.

The virus, first spotted on Thursday, sends out a blast of e-mail to addresses found on infected PCs.

Most of these messages contain links to news stories with content that “smells of right-wing political rhetoric,” said Vincent Gullotto, vice president of McAfee Inc.’s antivirus emergency response team. But a small percentage contain links to a Web site that tries to infect visiting machines with the virus, he said.

Among the many messages was one with the German subject line “60 Years of Freedom: Who’s Celebrating?” referencing the end of World War II. Another read: “Honorable Action” and contained a link to the Web site of the NPD, Germany’s right-wing nationalist political party. One in English carried the subject: “Dresden Bombing Is To Be Regretted Enormously,” referring to the Allied attack on the German city during World War II.

Other messages warned of ethnic Mafia groups and the increase in foreigners attending German schools.

The virus, called “Sober.q” by McAfee, is the 16th variant in the Germany-oriented Sober virus family that first appeared on the Internet in October 2003. Unlike earlier Sober viruses, this version isn’t packaged inside an email attachment. Rather, it’s being distributed by a Web site that automatically updates computers infected with the earlier, highly successful “Sober.p” variant, which began spreading on May 2.

Other variants of the Sober virus have been designed to send spam, but Gullotto said Sober.q has been much more successful than its predecessors, suggesting more such attacks could be ahead.

Oh, Jelly Jam...

Where were you this morning when "Andrea" sent me one of those German greetings?

Well, now I know why I'm getting a lot more German spams than usual.

THANKS JellyJam.

Well, if they are terrorism, I guess I should put them with all the Arabic spams, the occasional Russian spams, the Nigerian scams from Norway, and the Chinese spams and POUND that delete buttom.

Boom.

All gone.

Smiling...by the way, I can't pound the delete button anymore because tragically it doesn't have as much spring to the button as it used to.

"Hamas victorious-Abbas was too afraid to crack down on terrorists when he had all the power"
Jerusalem Post ^ | 5-16-05 | BARRY RUBIN

Posted on 05/16/2005 5:23:45 PM PDT by SJackson

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Abbas was too afraid to crack down on terrorists when he had all the power, now he will be even more timid.

Let's not mince words: The Hamas landslide victory in the recent Palestinian local elections is a disaster for the Palestinians' hopes for peace, and for Israel. It is a historical turning point. The West will have to choose between recognizing what is happening or veering onto some very dangerous territory."

Very interesting article regarding the unrest in Uzbekistan, IMO.

Islamic blame game
By B Raman

The violent uprising of the people of Andijan in Uzbekistan on May 13 has drawn a strong response from Uzbek authorities, resulting in the death of hundreds of people, according to some reports. The anti-government elements which organized the uprising claim to have captured 30 Uzbek soldiers and to be keeping them in their custody.

The uprising was preceded by a raid by supporters of the banned Hizbut Tehrir (HT) on a local prison in which the authorities had detained a group of 23 Muslim businessmen whom they had arrested on June 23, 2004, and accused of belonging to an Islamic extremist organization called the Akramia group. The raiders were reported to have forcibly got the so-called Akramia group members released.

On coming to know of their release, a large number of local residents came out onto the streets and captured a number of government buildings. The Uzbek security forces, after heavy fighting, managed to free the buildings from the control of the supporters of the so-called Akramia group and the HT.

The arrested Muslim businessmen, whose trial started at Alatankul on the outskirts of Andijan in February, had formed an Islamic mutual fund to help poor Muslims and to undertake charity work with its earnings. The authorities suspected it of being a front organization of the HT, a charge which was vehemently denied by the businessmen. They contended that they had no links with the HT and that their objective was purely philanthropic, with no political agenda.

Despite this, the authorities filed a charge-sheet against them under Articles 242 (setting up a criminal organization), 159 (undermining the constitutional basis of the Republic of Uzbekistan), 244-1 (preparing or distributing documents that contain a threat to public safety) and 244-2 (setting up, leading and participating in extremist religious organizations) of the Criminal Code.

Al-Qaeda Author Sends Warning to Tony Blair

By SITE Institute
May 16, 2005

A letter, written by Lewis Attiyatullah, a known al-Qaeda author, to the British Prime Minster, Tony Blair, "…warn[s] of an incoming huge and spectacular [event]". The five page letter, which was posted on an al-Qaeda affiliated message board, is titled: “Yes, Blair, this is a historic war". The letter, addressed to the "clever and malicious" Tony Blair " a graduate of the international school of cunning and malice", references speeches made by both Blair and Henry Kissinger to state that Iraq represents the culmination of Western influence in Muslim nations. Attiyatullah writes that "…the meaning of their [American] defeat in Iraq? It means their loss to all that they [the West] have achieved during five centuries…"

Attiyatullah promises that "…we say with all confidence, that the worst of the incoming [attacks] hasn’t happened yet, and that the West will pay a high price for all the crimes they committed against the Muslims during and before this century" He continues on scold Blair for his engagement in Iraq, stating "When you invaded Iraq, you thought that it would be a picnic, [now you] find out today that in Falujah, Baquba, Ramadi… that [the mujahideen] are the victorious… What is happening in Falujah today is not a usual thing, but it is a serious turnover in the struggle with West."

The letter draws a distinction between the actions of the mujahideen in Iraq and in Afghanistan. Attiyatullah writes "what is happening in Iraq is not a fight for stability and international political interests like what happened in the eighties in Afghanistan. But…the mujahideen push upon the infidels [Americans and American Allies]…and push them hard…With the confession of the West itself, that [their problems] start from the mujahideen themselves, and not [from] computations of interests and stabilities, there is no better proof [that the fight in Iraq is different than the fight against the Soviets in Afghanistan]…"

Attiyatullah proposes a reason for the apparent weakening of the mujahideen, namely "… They did not confront America when it was in a hurry or a sudden attack when it was coming two days before from overseas…they did not confront America when it was isolated and without logistical, moral or a fifth rank supporting it…But they faced the Americans after they settled…And after America ensured financial, morale and political support and the cooperation of all traitor counties in the area, and after it insured the support of long lines of traitors inside and outside of Iraq…This means that America ensured that it killed the fighters, and cutoff access, not only the access to logistic support or weapons, but even [access to] the media and information…So this situation is a real strangulation [for the mujahideen], much tougher than [that of] our brothers in Palestine…" However, despite their apparent weaknesses, Attiyatullah asks "how could all the traitors and heretics think that we were finished, when in reality we are increasing in growth and strength?"

The letter ends by telling readers to "Believe Blair and believe Kissinger [who said that a defeat of America is the defeat of the West]…believe them when they say that it is a historic war…They have lied; victory is for us with the help and power of Allah!!"
