QUINNIPIAC POLL FATALLY FLAWED---RESULTS SEVERELY SKEWED (Schiavo)

The “Quinnipiac University Poll” claims to be an accurate survey from 04/04/2005 – 04/11/2005 of “1,044 Florida registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points."

TOPICS: Constitution/Conservatism; Crime/Corruption; Culture/Society; News/Current Events
KEYWORDS: bush; govbush; poll; presbush; quinnipiac; schiavo; terri
The “Quinnipiac University Poll” synopsis claims that "Most Florida voters disapprove of the action President Bush and his brother, Gov. Jeb Bush, took to prolong the life of Terri Schiavo. Congress and the Florida legislature, both of which passed legislation aimed at keeping Schiavo alive, also got bad marks from the voters. Only the Supreme Court, which resolutely refused to get involved in the case, won a bare majority support in Florida," said Clay F. Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.”

The implication of the so-called “survey” is that it statistically accurately measures the opinion of those surveyed about "the way President George W. Bush, Gov. Jeb Bush, the Florida Legislature, the U.S. Congress, state and federal courts and the media handled the Terri Schiavo case."

The “survey” further implies that Florida’s registered voters are dissatisfied with the Bushes, the Florida Legislature and the U.S. Congress because respondents purportedly believe that they each went too far or got too involved in the Terri Schindler Schiavo case.

The “survey,” however, is fatally flawed.

By asking and coupling such generic questions as “Do you approve or disapprove of the way [the Bushes/state/federal legislature] is handling [his/their] job as [Pres./Gov./Rep.]” and “Do you approve or disapprove of the way -- [the Bushes/state/federal legislature] handled the case involving Terri Schiavo,” the “survey” completely fails to distinguish whether or not the apparently dissatisfied respondents believed that the Bushes and state and federal legislatures should have gone further or gotten more involved in rescuing an innocent, defenseless, disabled woman---and a highly probable Florida victim of spousal abuse and eventual spousal murder---from certain death if they failed to act and follow through.

The “survey” also completely fails to determine if the respondents opposed the dangerous Hitleresque precedent that Terri’s case set for all Americans, which now enables an abusive and/or money-hungry spouse or other relative to: (1) intentionally incapacitate someone, (2) claim the victim “would not want to ‘live that way’” based on purely self-serving hearsay, (3) deny the victim of therapy which could potentially help them recover or at least improve and (4) deny the victim their “Right to Choose” whether they want to try to eat or drink by mouth.

As a Bush 2004 Presidential Elector, I strongly support virtually all of what President Bush and Jeb Bush have done throughout their tenure. However, as one who has followed the Terri case for approximately two years, I am totally dissatisfied that neither Bush went far enough to save Terri.

Because of the horrible precedent they have now set---because of their failure to follow through to do what is right---millions of other Americans are at risk! And as the mother of a severely mentally and physically disabled 20 year old daughter, who Doctors said would not live more than 26 days after birth, I am NOT happy about it!

These were the same folks who said Bush-Cheney would win Pennsylvania last year.

Perhaps they did win, we'll never know and neither will Quinnipiac.

I've been saying for years, 'Let me run the polling, with the well of data that can predetermine whom to call and the power to pose the questions, and I'll give any outcome from the polling that the 'customer' wants.

FLIGHTDECK WROTE: "Why are your degrees listed at the bottom of the post?"

To indicate that I know about the subject of polling/surveying. Actually, I have another degree as well: BFA Radio/TV/Film.

Q-piac's issue polls are TERRIBLE. They ask very biased questions and try to get the result they want.

Their national polls are TERRIBLE. They have no sense of anything outside of the tri-state area.

Their local candidate polls are OK. They can predict CT/NY/NJ races fairly well.

Similar to ABC's poll question, which began: "As you may already know, a Florida woman, Terri Schiavo, has been on artificial life support for 15 years..."

Nope...no misdirection or false premises there.
(/dripping sarcasm)

The polls and the media were extremely biased. However, it is a sad day in America when the masses of people can be swayed into agreeing with the barbaric murder of an innocent woman. Most people supported MS in this (per the polls) and I think the info on him being a cheating husband was widely know to many. So what does that say about Americas. Not much I'm afraid.

I agree. I'm becoming aggravated that poll results with all the obvious flaws, bias and a tendency to massage the results through manipulation of the questions presented for polling and who knows what kind of massaging of the results is being done by the pollsters, are being used almost exclusively by politicians and the media to sway public opinion and set public policy.

It stinks. My hopes are Americans will say they are fed up with this government of, by and for the pollsters. Let's get it back for us The People.
