My Norton is driving me nuts
April 14, 2005 | pbrown

I've had to uninstall and then reinstall my Norton Internet Security 2004, a total of four times in the last two weeks. I am at my wits end, which for me, isn't too far a journey. Any help on what could possibly be wrong would be greatly appreciated.

I always wondered if they were made by BSA, since it stood for British Small Arms.

Or was it Birmingham Small Arms? Hmmmm, my memory is beginning to slip ...

Did some poking around and came across this:
1892 - The Royal Enfield Brand coined. RW Smith and Albert Eadie take control of Townsend’s, rechristening it "The Eadie Manufacturing Company". Soon, they stumble upon a contract with Royal Small Arms factory in Enfield, Middlesex to supply precision rifle parts for the making of Enfield rifles. Meanwhile, they make their first new bicycle - called the "Enfield". The Enfield is marketed through a new company - The Enfield Manufacturing Company Ltd. A year later, the cycles were launched publicly and the company added the word "Royal" to the name. With that, the legendary trademark - "Built Like A Gun" appeared for the first time.

So I guess the Enfield gun and Enfield motorcycle were made by the same company.

I had a bizarre experience last year. Suddenly my AOL dial-up stopped being able to make a connection (I use AOL for emergencies when DSL is down.) It started working again however when I un-installed Norton Anti-virius. I tried again to make sure - re-installing Norton, then AOL 9.0 could not make a connection again. I tested this multiple times. This was a total pain and at first I assumed the problem was the XP service pack, but it wasn't.

My carrier was Bayou Internet, sometimes it would take me an hour to dial up. They bought out World Net and it was never the same. I'm with Bellsouth now and no problem with dial-up. My daughter got tired of not being able to get to me by phone because we only had one phone line, so she got me a seperate line put in. My sister was on AOL and all she had was problems with it. I have a stack of AOL disks that they send in the mail for free hours. My sister said not to use them.

I'm pretty sure it's the Norton that is creating all of my problems.

Good luck and hope your ordeal is over soon. :-) Thank you. If this streak of bad luck doesn't end soon concerning my computer...Well, it can't last forever can it?

>>Or was it Birmingham Small Arms?

Dunno, I just get all this from reading. I just know BSA made some cool motos.

The right-side shifter always made me worried about ever getting one of those older Brit bikes. I've been told you adjust pretty quick, but still...

Get AVG, it's free, simple and ACTUALLY works!

I've had that one suggested to me many times today. That appears to be the favorite. Thank you.

Thanks so much, for the links and the research. That motorcycle has an interesting background and used to have a loyal following. I read at that other link you gave, the company in India is going to export a retro model called the 'Bullet 65 S' to the U.K. next year. In the picture, it looks great. The British bikes had their own unique sound, nothing like a Harley, but totally different than the 4-stroke Japanese bikes.

Now get back online and go to http://www.trendmicro.com/en/home/us/personal.htm first and run Housecall to check for virus (bet you will not have any but you will have spyware Thank you. I printed out you instructions. If I do that, won't I be going on the web unprotected? I think I'm going to dump Norton, it's leaving a bad taste in my mouth.

It doesn't matter if you know them. Nice people get viruses and send them too. If ANYONE sends you email with an attachment you need to be careful.

I've never scanned e-mail from people I know before opening it. That's a habit I'll get into now.

As for your adventures in browsing, other keywords to avoid are, "whips", "chains", "leather", and "cute kitty". Happy computing!

Thanks. I'll avoid those words like the plague.

Just pick "Scan Now, It's Free" and follow the prompts.

Thank you. Tonight I'm going to either fix this or spend a lot of time watching tv.

I have no problem running Internet Explorer and Firefox, sometimes at the same time. Firefox seems to be faster on ebay, but not on all sites.

Thanks. I haven't been to ebay in quiet a while. I kept hearing their site was full of spyware.

"After I delete the software - I run defrag - then after I reinstall the software - I run defrag."

What's FAR more important than running a defrag at that time (unless you're deleting MASSIVE files) is to clean your system registry.

For that purpose, I have found nothing better than System Mechanic.

I used Trend Micro which was great but they screwed it up with Live Update feature.

I have had no problem with Norton. For the last 3 years now.

McAfee is a system HOG.

There are just some people who have problems with software. A buddy lost his USB printer according to Windows it was the USB on the Motherboard. He turned it off back on then plugged in the printer and it works.

If the Anti virus is free it is not that good. My Norton updates all the time. It is quick and easy with Broadband.

But as I say whatever works for ya use it. Everyone has favs and biases to a product. Some people never have problems some do. It all depends on who built the PC in the first place. I build my own. Have since 1986 and the old 8088 12 mhz 640 meg ram , DOS days.

I don't know about spyware, but ebay, like many commercial sites, embeds a link to an ad tracking server. This is not technically spyware, but spybot reports the activity.

Thank you. It's all printed out. Tonight I will shut this thing down or fix it. I've been leaning toward firefox for quiet awhile. I just haven't had the guts to try and switch over. Afraid I would destroy my computer pushing the wrong button. At this point, it's not doing me much good as it is. If I do too much damage in trying to fix it, I'll take it to a computer shop and have them set it right.

So far this is a hardy machine. No matter what feeble attempts I try, I haven't destroyed it yet.

Oh, another thing - disable Norton's "Live update" feature. It WILL screw up your internet time - but seriesly!

I have two of them staring me in the face now. One is LiveUpdate, and the other is LiveUpdate Update. I'm not touching them now, since I'll be getting rid of all of it tonight.

Not to cause further confusion, but there was a well known British bike named Enfield.

I didn't know that. I love my rifle. I'm not crazy about it's open sight. But it shoots a target dead on. It's stamped 1943. I took it to the firing range on a military base Sunday. They asked what rifles we had and when we got to the Enfield, the MP's asked if they could see it. They like it.
