My Norton is driving me nuts

I've had to uninstall and then reinstall my Norton Internet Security 2004, a total of four times in the last two weeks. I am at my wits end, which for me, isn't too far a journey. Any help on what could possibly be wrong would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't installed SP2 & my XP has a firewall, which can be disabled.

Skip it. It happens with Windows. Just use the setting in Systemworks. Also, uninstall it completly.

I thought you were complaining about a sweet handling but somewhat under powered British motorcycyle with a cult following.

I didn't know there was a Norton motorcycle till today. For me, when I think of motorcycles, I think of Harleys.

I haven't had any problems with IE. Is MS and Firefox compatible?

I have both on my home machines... and Netscape coexists with them, too.

The problem with IE is not just its security holes- it is hooked into the operating system, whereas FF, Opera, Netscape, and other standalone browsers are not. This avoids a lot of potential damage from malware.

Well, in that case you first need to disable the system restore feature and run a full virus scan (I recommend the Trend Micro online scan) and clean your system. If you have prollems getting on the internet, try booting in safe mode and empty all temp files, do a disk cleanup cleaning ALL segments. Then reboot and run virus scan.

Oh, another thing - disable Norton's "Live update" feature. It WILL screw up your internet time - but seriesly!

Regarding Lucas, you got that right. Being a glutton for punishment I had a 69 BSA Lightning 650 and a 64 Triumph Spitfire. Arrrgh. What awful electronics.

Yeah, I never understood why Lucas continued year after year to produce such faulty products.

The BSA 650 Lightning and the Triumph 650 Bonneville were probably the two best known British bikes in the U.S. Both were classics.

Why would anyone install software on a motorcycle?

I have a friend who's life is essentially devoted to doing exactly that. He's reversed engineered the ignition and the fuel maps on his bike and can tweak them all day long to optimize for various outcomes like performance, reduced operating temperature and the like.

As an IT professional, I am inclined to agree. Symantec's (the company who makes Norton... products) quality has slipped as of late. They seem to be following Microsoft's lead and focusing more on pretty interfaces, bells and whistles than quality and stability.

AVG is a free, high-quality virus scanner for Windows.

ZoneAlarm is a free, high-quality firewall for Windows.

With those, and Microsoft's free Anti-Spyware software, you won't need Symantec/Norton any more. :-)

You've got other problems dude. And from your posts, your not capable of fixing them due to your experience level. I just love the fact that you think you can poke and prod around the system and click things, yet you don't even know what "a SP2 is". LMAO.

I got here today didn't I. And I did it by poking and prodding. Hell, even a watch is right twice a day. Didn't you ever just feel around in the dark for something? I'm nothing if not persistent. If there's a problem, in my own inexperienced way, I will fumble around till I either destroy it...or fix it. I try and remember Occam's Razor theory when it comes to this thing.

NO..I'm talking about the virus protector. When you first buy it, it needs to update ALOT. So it might do it in portions instead of all at once.....

My Norton rarely gives me trouble. It always starts on the second kick when it's cold, and on the first when it's warm. Nortons are cool!

I never turn my computer off. I just disconnect from my phone line and shut my monitor off. When it shuts off, it does so at it's own discretion and without notice.

In addition to that, the later versions of Windows disk cleanup are more powerful than they used to be, and do a pretty good job of ditching junk that can slow the system and hide malware. Ccleaner ( google it ) is more powerful, but be warned, its default clean will get your cookies, so don't run it before unchecking that entry in the options.

I have that Ccleaner. I've used it once.

if you goof the registry you may have to reinstall everything.

Wow! Now that really is surprising.

It's been years, but I've seen 650s that had Enfield and others that had Royal Enfield on the tank. I wasn't sure whether the company had changed names at some point, or the 'Royal' was their top of the line model. I always wondered if they were made by BSA, since it stood for British Small Arms.

Click on Start - run - it should show "cookies" highlighted - click OK - it will give you a window showing all the cookie documents. Click on Edit - select all - all the items will be highlighted in the window.

The only cookies I need are FR's and Sandal's in Negril, I can lose all the rest. I talked to tech support a couple of weeks ago and they told me to dump all my cookies. I had 300 of them. I've believe I've only had to login on FR three times since joining.
