Petco, PETA agree to truce over large birds
San Diego Daily Transcript ^ | Wed, Apr 13, 2005

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and San Diego-based Petco Animal Supplies Inc. announced an agreement on Tuesday. PETA will end its campaign against the national pet food and supply retailer and Petco will end the sale of large birds in its stores.

Don Cowan, director of communications for Petco, said the two organizations have disagreed on this issue for a couple of years and the deal marks a truce. PETA agreed it will take down its "PetcoCruelty" Web site, remove all references to "Petno" on all sites affiliated with the organization and withdraw its support of the use of the "Petno" logo by other groups.

"We believe that all birds should have the freedom to fly and be with others of their own kind, but large birds are exceptionally hard hit by captivity, and we commend Petco for deciding to help discourage their lifetime confinement," said Ingrid Newkirk, PETA's president, in a written statement. "We hope other responsible retailers follow Petco's lead in this regard."

PETA intends to assist Petco in enlisting accredited bird rescue groups to work with the company in its in-store adoption program.

The end of selling large birds is not a material issue to Petco, according to Cowan, who said Petco will continue to sell smaller birds like finches. The company will continue to work with its shelter partners to help adopt not only dogs and cats but also homeless birds of all sizes as part of its established "Think Adoption First" program. Petco has also improved its practices and procedures for animal care such as taking all animals outside for hourly walks and offering training programs for animal care. Petco also investigates the venders it acquires animals from.

Petco looks at this as one of a series of steps weve taken to ensure that all animals in the store are well cared for, Cowan said. In the total scheme it was the right thing to do.

It was my experience that many of your sick birds, would have improved with a better diet and vitamins.

Parrots have diseases, as we do, cancer is common.

Maybe. Maybe not. The rescue boards are flush with stories of birds who are loved and well-taken care of, yet start plucking and self-mutilating.

They all can't be diet or disease-related.

To play devil's advocate, why is Petco selling pets that are prone to cancer?

Once PETA gets an inch with you, they will be back again and again to take more.
=====
But NOBODY has answered my question about the legal grounds that PETA has against Petco. Why is Petco giving into these hacks?? On what legal basis are they caving?
Anyone can show me pictures of abused animals -- those pictures did not come FROM PETCO STORES!!!

WHAT IS THE LEGAL BASIS THAT CAUSED PETCO TO GIVE IN TO PETA???? I HAVE YET TO SEE ANYTHING THAT SAYS PETCO WAS GUILTY OF WHAT -- ANIMAL CRUELTY??? HELLO??

Since they're birds, we can't tone down their sexual behavior through spaying and neutering because their avian anatomy doesn't lend itself to these procedures. So, the only thing we humans can do is to either learn to live with them through the breeding season or give them up.

I was wondering about spaying and neutering.
Any more details on their breeding season?

Nature is a lot more cruel than a loving pet owner.

That is because PETA has won with them before. PetCo use to sell dogs and cats. Now PetCo houses cat adoptions within their store. This is the same thing they will be doing now with the birds.

I'm not sure what you're saying here.

It sounds like you're saying that it is bad that Petco no longer sells mill-bred dogs and cats?

Do you support the large-scale breeding of dogs, cats & birds which will be sold in large chain stores?

ummm. They have been trying to push vegan food for carnivorous pets. Really, I'm not kidding.

These people have major personality disorders and God knows what else.

>>>>denying them their most basic instinct

That can be said about all animals. Not just your preference for birds.

Either you support pet ownership or you don't.

Actually, I hear Sender keeps the birds in a shoebox with a brick ontop.

>>>>>PeTa's ultimate goal is to stop any and all "exploitation" of animals as pets, for sports, entertainment, or food.

Actually, that is a front too. They are trying to keep a monopoly on the animal market.

Ever hear of their save a sato program? They import animals from THEIR PERSONAL puppy mills in 3rd world countries, use sob stories to scam companies and people for freebies like: N.W. Airlines, Vets, volunteers for labor/work and Food (IAMS), then keep the shelters stocked with the strays. They get grants and charge 'adoption fees'. It is pretty much a full profit business.

Hence is why they try to shut anyone down that is a threat to their 'income'.

PETA mounted a boycott and an public-awareness campaign about Petco's cruel breeding practices and since Petco didn't want to go out of business, they chose to stop selling large birds.

Of course it helped that PETA is a Petco shareholders and filed a complaint with the SEC that Petco was omitting crucial information to investors, including specific sales figures for its animal business. I guess when the stock started dropping and sales fell off, the corporate bigwigs decided they needed to do something to reverse the trend.

Here's some examples of what parrots do to themselves in captivity

These are examples of birds who have been abused and or neglected. It is not a "fair" representation of pet birds.

That can be said about all animals.

Exactly. A dog's most basic instinct is as a pack hunter, and even the most domesticated dogs still display some aspects of that behavior. Meanwhile, Wisconson has been dealing with such a plague of ferral cats that they are seriously discussing reinstitution a cat hunt.

For that matter, a rock's "nature" is to be actively errorded over the millenia. Is keeping a pet rock cruel to that nature?

>>>The reason Petco shouldn't be selling these birds is because there are a huge number of them stuck in cramped underfunded bird shelters, waiting for adoptive homes that will never come for most of them.

That is their excuse for all the 'pet stores'. No one should buy from anywhere but the shelters.

The number of legitimate stories is far smaller than the shelter stocking from PETA's 'mills'.

Besides, you can't tell consumers where to buy their products. There will also be people that go to shelters first. There will also be people that want to choose where to purchase.
