11 illegal aliens caught, then released in Fairfax
The Washington Times ^ | 04/13/2005 | Gary Emerling

Federal authorities released 11 illegal aliens who were detained during a traffic stop in Annandale because immigration officials said they did not pose a threat to the public.

"The 11 passengers were processed and released," said Ernestine Fobbs, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency. "There were children involved, so it was better that we released them."

Authorities ordered the 11 Mexican nationals, three of whom are children, to return to immigration offices tomorrow for further processing. Ms. Fobbs said officials do not know where the illegals are in the meantime.

"It's up to them whether they come back," she said. "If they do not, they will be considered fugitives, and once we do encounter them again, they'll be removed from the United States. They stand to lose a lot if they do not appear."...

..."It highlights the problem that immigration violation is a federal offense and a state or county officer does not have the authority to detain them for a federal offense," Mr. Albo said. "You get your hands on them, and you have no authority to do anything."

A Virginia law enacted last year allows local law-enforcement officials to detain illegal aliens who are suspected of a crime, have been previously convicted of a felony or have been previously deported or left the U.S. after a conviction and illegally returned. Police also can detain illegals for up to 72 hours without bail until they are taken into federal custody.

Under the state law, there is no authority for a local law-enforcement officer to arrest a person solely for being an illegal alien.

When does it occur to politicians that invasion, not to mention destroying the education, welfare, and healthcare systems is a 'threat'?

The "pockets of guest workers" are not "pockets" nor are they "guest workers". That program was eliminated decades ago.

In fact, many of the people at the labor pickup points are here legally. Many Central Americans were allowed into the US as a temporary measure during the Nicaraguan and El Salvadorian wars.

The wars are over but Department of Justice, et al, keep extending the parole.

Mexicans are rather unusual to find running loose in Fairfax County. Our Hispanics come from different countries. No doubt these people are as confused as anyone ~ thee is, after all, no friendly Mexican community here to welcome them and hide them out!

I just heard last night there's a bill in the General Assembly here in NC to be it easier for the children of illegal aliens to attend college!

No mention of making it easier for American children to attend college, just illegal aliens.

Something is very wrong with this picture!

Yeah, Bush!

I have built almost 500 houses as a general contractor. I did not ever employ an illegal knowingly. If I found out that I had one, I would have removed him so fast it would make your head swim. I am so AGAINST this invasion from the south, which our Pres seems to desire, even encourage!

Tom tnacredo had no problem using them to remodel his basement with a theater with an overhead projector and terraced seating.

Am I going to go into frothing mouth rant over who he chose to remodel his basement, no, I say more power to him, but if he was true to his rhetoric he would get his sledgehammer out and destroy the creation made by "impure" labor.

I have a friend from Toronto that works as a planner for local gum't (a socialists dream job), who has endured all amounts of hassles over getting and keeping his work permits. He doesn't want to go back to the low-paying job he had before, but wonders how all of these invaders can just swim across and live here, without the hassles... can even get gum't benefits that HE CAN'T... He doesn't want or need them, but wonders why!

Yeah, Bush!

Uh Bush has nothing to do of what the NC Legislature does.

But you knew already that, but decided to be a good little minion to put out false information.

What am I missing here? I thought that being in this country illegally was a crime.

The Constitution says one of the duties of the federal government is to protect each state from invasion.

IMHO Virginia has every right to put them on a plane and ship them to DC.

Which Fairfax County do you live in? I visit often, and agree that there are a lot of Salvadorans and South Americans, but Mexican nationals probably outnumber them 2:1(in Arlington, as well)...

Adding to that, the number of asians and middle easterners is increasing exponentially. There are lots of Mosques being built for our ROP'ers, and the authorities seem to be encouraging them.

Remember one thing, that our friend Rushbo always mentions..."follow the money".

Gum't types make their money by making gum't bigger. Schools are loaded with gum't employees (union members). Gum't rewards schools with larger enrollments, with larger disbursements of our money... The same applies to Social Services, and most other gum't agencies... They gotta spend all they get this year, so they can get more next year!

Why ship them to DC? And why on a plane?

THey'd simply land right back in Virginia ~ that's where all the airports are!

There are virtually no Mexicans in the DC area, not even legal ones!

The Hispanics around here come from the Central American countries, South America, Spain itself, and the Caribbean!

We have several Mexican restaurants in Springfield and Annandale. I'm thinking real hard and I think maybe I've seen 1 or 2 Mexicans actually working in one of them in the last 20 years.

Most of our illegals in Fairfax County are non-Hispanic as well.

Yep and the far right is following the left in suing those "evil" businesses.

The far left hates business becuase it creates wealth, the far right becuase it doesn't like that some businesses hire the wrong kind of people.

Either way in their zealousness(left and right) to destroy business, they hurt a lot of people who they say they never intended to hurt.

I wasn't sure, but had based my statements on conversations with local Mexicans. I checked on Google, though, and found that Mexicans only represent 7% of the DC hispanics... I stand (almost) corrected.

There is a larger number of bilingual Latinos in the Washington area as compared to the national average. This is a reflection of the higher educational and economic levels of the Washington community.

• In terms of ethnicity, Salvadoreans represent the dominant Latino subgroup in the Washington D.C. area (29%), followed by Bolivians, Puerto Ricans and Nicaraguans (around 8% each), Mexicans (7%), Guatemalans and Colombians (6%) and Cubans (5%). It is one the most diverse Latino markets in the United States.
