Given their history I understand the basis of Germany's criminalization of Nazism and Holocaust denial, but wherever there are judges there are unintended consequences.

How do they characterize the blitz of London?

Calling Dresden a holocaust only serves to destroy the word holocaust, which can only serve to minimize the Holocaust.

I'm assuming the phrase "it takes two to tango" doesn't translate well into german.

Strictly speaking, the word "holocaust," which comes from the ancient Greek for "burnt", might seem apt for Dresden, much of it immolated by the fires started by the RAF's incendiary bombs.

Considering that tens of thousands of refugees were literally incinerated during the bombings, "holocaust" is a very apt term.

I think it would have been better to call it a tsunami....it is a much more popular word.

German prosecutors have provoked outrage by ruling that the 1945 RAF bombing of Dresden can legally be termed a "holocaust".

Very soon the rightful rulers of Europe, the French and Germans will be in control of the European Union.

I'm sure they will treat Britain with great respect, as they have here.

Well I for one am sure sorry that the RAF was so mean to those fine folks at Dresden. My advise to these Germans whining about this is... STFU.

It's understandible only in the sense that they have exchanged one form of totalitarian fascism for another.

Between this and Red China threatening Japan over their history textbooks, I must say that I'm glad that everyone has buried the hatchet and let bygones be bygones.

May 7, 1945 German government issues unconditional surrender to Allied forces.

On August 6 and 9, 1945, the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were destroyed by the first atomic bombs used in warfare.

The German people should thank God, and the allied forces their army didn't hang on another 12 weeks.

Did the Allies round up all the ethnic Germans from all of Germany (as well as Austria and Slovakia) and imprison them in Dresden and surround the city with guard towers and electrical barbed wire before bombing it?

Then it's not a Holocaust.

"The Nazis entered this war under the rather childish delusion that they were going to bomb everyone else, and nobody was going to bomb them. At Rotterdam, London, Warsaw, and half a dozen other places, they put their rather naive theory into operation. They sowed the wind, and now they are going to reap the whirlwind." -RAF General Arthur 'Bomber' Harris

Masses of innocent civilians in the wrong place at the wrong time, suffering the consequences of ill will on an incomprehensible scale. It happens all the time. It will happen again.

When I first heard the term holocaust it referred to a big fire. Dresden was a holocaust.
