Apple on Tuesday announced the ship date for its next generation operating system, Mac OS X Tiger. The operating system, which the company says includes hundreds of enhancements, will be available to customers beginning at 6:00 pm on Friday, April 29, 2005, at special events held at the company's retail locations and authorized retailers. Pre-orders for Tiger are being taken today at the online Apple Store -- Tiger will cost US$129.

In addition to the single license available for $129, Apple is also offering a Mac OS X Tiger Family Pack, a single-residence, five-user license that will be available for $199. The Mac OS Up-To-Date upgrade package is available to all customers who purchase a qualifying new Mac system on or after April 12  for a shipping and handling fee of $9.95. Tiger requires a minimum of 256MB of memory and is designed to run on any Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G5, G4 or G3 processor and built-in FireWire.

Every one wants to know - "Will Mac OS X Tiger run on the new Mac Mini?"

(Denny Crane: "Sometimes you can only look for answers from God and failing that... and Fox News".)

Of course -- why wouldn't it?

It's a full fledged Mac after all..

You MAY need a memory upgrade to run things smoothly.

I'm waiting to buy a mini at the end of the year --- Hopefully new models with higher speeds, more RAM, and Tiger installed will be out for the same $500

The Mac Mini is a PowerPC G4, has built-in FireWire, and supports up to 1 GB of memory, so there's no reason Tiger would not run on it.

Wait, hasn't the "problem" with Mac and Apple been that they refused to sell their operating system to anyone else? Does this signify a new era where you can buy a computer from someone other than Apple and get the Mac OS on it?

Yeah, this one won't even run all the latest viruses, worms, and spyware.

>>>"Yeah, this one won't even run all the latest viruses, worms, and spyware."

Another reason to stay with Windoze. Moving to Apple might cause untold layoffs in the virus creating industries in developing countries and in the IT monitoring industry inside the U.S. itself. This could be hugh.

Hoppy

Actually the most important component is a nice big LCD monitor. Get a 19" LCD then after that even a cheapo E-Machines Celeron at 2.80ghz is more than adequate for most users. You *might* need to add 256mb more memory but then Crapples also need more memory than the advertised base model

Last week Best Buy had a beautiful Samsung 19" (with DVI too) for $339
