HANNOVER, Germany Germany and Russia announced agreement Monday to build a North European Gas Pipeline under the Baltic Sea that will allow Russia's energy giant Gazprom to deliver gas directly to Western Europe and sharply reduce its dependence on its traditional transit routes through Ukraine and Belarus.

The announcement of the agreement, which will give Gazprom a larger foothold in Europe's energy sector, was made by Chancellor Gerhard Schröder of Germany and President Vladimir Putin of Russia in Hannover at the opening of one of the world's largest international trade fairs

I have always thought that Ukraine should watch its relationship with Moscow, and the energy giant next door. Democracy has its ring but not in cold unheated flats.

I think what it comes down to is that Ukraine, Moldovia and Poland figured to piss on Moscow and still get their cheap energy and fat tariffs. Between this, the gas project called Northern Europe (it ties into the Norweign lines) and the Black Sea based project through Bulgaria and Greece; Kiev, Cheninua and Warsaw are about to get hardballed upside the head. I'm sure the Germans, French and Brits don't mind pitching in for this project too, to avoid giving away money to Ukraine and Poland.

Riga found out about this the hard way. They decided to piss on Moscow and figured they'd get away with it since they had the major oil ports. Moscow built a new one south of St. Petersburge and rerouted traffic. Riga got to feel good and self righteous right up to the moment they lost all those tariff fees and then it wasn't such a coozy feeling anymore, especially in the winter.

So what do the Germans get? You'd think a return of Koenigsburg and East Prussia (the part Stalin kept anyway), but then again the last thing modern Germany needs is more land for its population to dwindle in.

The Germans get gas minus the Ukrainian and Polish tariffs. Cheaper gas to warm your bankrupt home.

We Germans are not interested to get this piece of land again, since it would cost us bazillions of welfare for all those non-German wodka addicted inhabitants there. It belongs to Russia and was their prize after 1945. I hope they get happy with it.

BTW - it is only logical that Russia and Germany will grow closer togehter in the near future...

Heehhee, check out the stats, Germany is like number 4 on the alcohol consumption per capita lists for the world, Russia is number 12. I've lived in Germany (stationed there) and saw the 6 months of drunken feasting.

Besides, you'd have to fight the Poles who also claim that land. But then again, everyone claims everyone elses land, human nature.
