I don't know if anyone else is watching this, but the Senate hearing on John Bolton has repeatedly referred to a "Mr. Smith" whom Bolton said had behaved unprofessionally.
Well, Sen. John Kerry just gave "Mr. Smith's" name in the open hearing.
Once a jackass, always a jackass.
It is true. It doesn't matter what the reasons were to avoid using the name. The point is that they didn't and that they cited security reasons. Kerry screwed up and should be called on it. I am not calling for prosecution or jail terms. I just want to show again what a jerk and hypocrite he is.
self-ping
Investigation? Nothing to investigate. Kerry inadvertantly provided the name of a CIA officer on national TV--a name that everyone else at the hearing scrupulously avoided mentioning for the stated reason of security considerations. Kerry screwed up and should be held accountable.
Well, now that Kerry outed him, yes Mr. Smith should be removed. For his own safety!
His career stops at 1999.
He's undercover all right.
You don't mention an employee during Senate hearings that may have retired six years ago - the reason his resume is clean is because nobody was supposed to know him.
Hi-I decided to check in on the replay of the hearing--I am going to try to record the part with Kerry, but I was watching Lugar's opening remarks and he was listing all of the people that have been interviewed by the Senators re: Bolton getting mad at Westman---he named Mr. Finger, Mr. Westman., Mr. Ford, then said something about an Intell.-CIA, Latin American, then just said the word "Armstrong", then went on to name some other names....
So, I really don't know, unless Lugar inadvertantly gave the LAST name after naming what he did, ie. CIA agent.
So, what do you think?
So, I guess what you are saying is, even if John Kerry did out a CIA agent, it wouldn't matter---some harm, no foul, seems to be the Senates credo---
BTW, I don't know which FReeper has posted threads regarding the LOST---Land - Sea Treaty that is supposedly really bad for the US, and Senator Jeff Sessions has lectured against, BUT Bolton was asked today by Sen. Sarbanes about this treaty---Bolton said he hadn't read it, but knew that the Bush Admin was in favor, so he would be also....
If anyone that reads this thread knows which Freeper has been interested in this, please pass on the information.
Did Kerry Out a Federal Agent During Bolton Hearing?

Can a US Senator be charged with a crime while the Senate is in session?
Not me.
He's history
Stale
Boring
Ignorant
In other words the same arrogant, pompous A__ he was during the campaign.
Notice he and the Breck Girl surface at almost the same time? They must think there are BRAINS in numbers. :) They are WRONG. :) Where is Tahraysa I wonder?
Thank you---I looked and found a pretty recent thread about it---I appreciate the help!!
I am disappointed that Bolton said he was in favor, but I have to remind myself that a UN Ambassador is a diplomatic position, not a policy position.
Therefore, it is incumbent on all that are against it to contact their Senators and/or the White House, IMHO.
Interesting. I didn't catch that from Lugar. Perhaps it was because the names didn't have any real context until the Q&As. If that is the case, Lugar also screwed up. During the give and take part of the hearings, they were all circumspect about mentioning his name citing security. Nonetheless, Kerry's remarks would make a good sound bite on Rush's show tomorrow.
Did you notice that the AP is now reporting the same story?
I hate all the traitors trying to destroy America.....the crowd in DC are the most corrupt in all of America including 5 of the supreme court judges.
Interesting.I didn't catch that from Lugar.
See also, from www.armscontrolwonk.com:
"Mr. Smith" is Fulton ArmstrongThe anonymous Mr. Smith from the Bolton hearings, if I understand Senators Kerry and Lugar correctly, is Fulton Armstrong, National Intelligence Officer for Latin America since June 2000.
Here is Armstrongs bio from an archived copy of the NIC website (as of December 2003):
Fulton ArmstrongInsight on the News reported at the time that Armstrong was coordinating Boltons talking points for the speech in questionso I dont understand why we are using a pseudonym.
National Intelligence Officer for Latin America
Fulton T. Armstrong was appointed National Intelligence Officer for Latin America on 1 June 2000. Previously Mr. Armstrong served as Chief of Staff of the DCI Crime and Narcotics Center (CNC). Prior to that, he served two terms as a Director for Inter-American Affairs at the National Security Council (1995-97 and 1998-99) and as Deputy NIO for Latin America (1997-98).
Mr. Armstrong began his government career in 1980 as Legislative Assistant and Press Secretary to US Representative Jim Leach. In 1984-95, he served as analyst, political-economic officer, and manager specializing in Latin America in the both the intelligence and policy communities.
Prior to joining government, Mr. Armstrong worked four years as a reporter, editor, and translator in Taiwan. He earned his B.S. in Linguistics and Spanish at Georgetown University in 1976. He is fluent in Spanish and Mandarin Chinese.
The Insight... story is interesting because it suggests that Bolton was pushing for a very, very hawkish assessment on Cuba:
In his gagged statement, a copy of which was obtained by Insight, Bolton expresses frustration at the apparent unwillingness of U.S. intelligence agencies to disclose information about Cubas biological weapons which could include anthrax, smallpox and variants of encephalitis such as West Nile virus. Recent outbreaks of West Nile virus that have killed more than 30 Americans and infected another 675 have been traced to birds that may have been infected at Cuban bioweapons labs, according to defecting scientists who report Fidel Castros experiments using animals as carriers of weaponized germ agents.
Wow. Does that really imply that Bolton wanted to pin West Nile on Castro? Or, is Insight... just engaging in the old tactic of placing statements next to one another to imply a relationship?
Late Update: Let me be clear about this: Senators Kerry and Lugar said nothing new by mentioning Armstrongs name.
- The Washington Times-owned Insight on the News identified Armstrong as the NIO who was coordinating Boltons speech in September 2002.
- The New York Times published a story about efforts by Otto Reich to pressure Armstrong in January 2003.
- A Wall Street Journal opinion piece accused Armstrong of a lackadaisical approach to a mounting body of disturbing evidence about threats to the United States from Cuba and Venezuela in March 2003.
- Salon mentioned Armstrong, again by name, as an analyst who had been smeared as somehow under the influence of the Cuban government in January 2004.
Senator Lugaraccording to my transcriptopened the hearing by announcing:
Now, staff has in fact interviewed Mr. Westerman; Carl Ford, who will be appearing before the committee, as I understand, tomorrow morning at our hearing at 9:30; Mr. Fred Flights (ph), the Bolton special assistant who might know something about this; Tom Fingar, the INR principal deputy assistant secretary at the time; Fulton Armstrong, national intelligence officer for Latin America at the NIC at the time; Stuart Cohen, Mr. Armstrongs supervisor at the NIC at that time.
Later, Chris Dodd suggested there was something untoward about mentioning Armstrongs name and everyone played along with the ridiculous Mr. Smith charade until Kerry read Armstrongs name in a transcript.
Even later update: Anne Gearan, AP Diplomatic Writer, should be ashamed of this paragraph:
Committee Chairman Richard Lugar, R-Ind., and Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., both mentioned a name, Fulton Armstrong, that had not previously come up in public accounts of the intelligence flap.
Other than the four that I cited, she means.
