Westerners see poetic justice in saving snakehead [Washington Times Conservative Spin]
The Washington Times ^ | 4/11/05 | Valarie Richardson

Now it's time for a little payback. Mr. Gardner is leading a band of 13 commissioners from Western counties who have filed to seek protection for a rare new species: the northern snakehead fish, also known as the ?Frankenfish.?

Yes, Mr. Gardner understands that the carnivorous, Asian-bred fish not only can swim but also crawl across land and wreck havoc on local wildlife. And no, he lives nowhere near the Potomac River, where the snakehead makes its home — and that's the point. "As I read about this fish in the Potomac, I thought, 'You know, that sounds like an interesting proposition,'" says Mr. Gardner, a commissioner in southwestern Utah's Washington County. "I discussed it with some other commissioners, and we thought that this could really let people in the East know how the Endangered Species Act works and how it can affect the lives of everyday people," he says.

Sure, saving the Frankenfish is preposterous. But not much more so than some previous attempts to list species found in the West, says Roger Mancebo, a Pershing County, Nev., commissioner. Mr. Mancebo cites the recent effort to win protection for the sage grouse, a bird so common that it's hunted in 15 states....

"Mr. Gardner, a commissioner in southwestern Utah's Washington County wants to save the snakehead?"

Meanwhile, Mr. Zygoat, a republican in western Maryland's Washington County, who regularly fishes the Potomac river thinks that Mr. Gardner had better find another target to use to get his point across. Because, after all, as tough as these critters are, they could surely survive a few days in Mr.Zygoats cooler while he drives west to let Mr.Snakehead get acquainted with Mr. Gardner's nearest body of water.

Tactics worthy of "Earth Liberation Front" lefties. Are you one? Seems apt and just to use their laws against them.

We don't need these things eating our smallmouth bass and other species. If this guy has a beef with some tree hugger down in the D.C. area, he should confine his tactics to that specific locale. We who live in RED western Maryland should not have to pay the price. By the way, I agree with Mr. Gardner in theory,(against the enviro-whackos') he just doesn't realize the geography his "plan" would affect. In reality, his plan is never going to happen, no more than my "retaliation" is. But then, the snakehead may prevail regardless of anyones wishes. And that would be sad.

Can we simply appreciate the fact that this is a way to illustrate the absurdity of the endangered species act? Does anyone think that regulators would actually let this guy succeed in something that would kill their whole environmental scheme. They will find a way to achieve the result they want, but this guy will have made his proetst point and educated many people.

It took using the Special Persecutor stuff against a Democrat to convince Democrats that this law could be used for something other than harassing Republicans, and that it was therefore inherently flawed.

I realize what he is saying, and agree with the "message" he is sending. It's just that the next time my trusty old Ugly Stik starts twitching, I don't wanna come face to gillslit with one of these ugly muthas. As I stated in a previous post, the snakehead may be here to stay, regardless of what anyone thinks of it. It's not yet known how deeply they are entrenched in the river's eco-system. There's no way I would introduce the thing into another body of water. That was just my stupid response to a stupid idea.

I agree that introducing the fish into any other body of water here would be a bad idea. A terrible idea. I was thinking merely of the idea of seeking protected status for it.

I've been wondering for years when Westerners would realize the environuts are using their part of the country for disproportionate enforcement of the Endangered Species Act.

We need to find lots of spiders, beetles, and minnows that are 'unique' to areas in NY, Pennsylvania, N.Jersey, Conn. Mass. etc and close those states down.
