Buzbee Steps Down as Head of (Galveston, TX) County Dems

Citing a heavy workload and the desire to spend more time with his family, Galveston County Democratic Party chairman Tony Buzbee stepped down as the party’s leader Friday. Buzbee, an attorney and former candidate for state representative, had been on the job for a little more than 20 months after first taking the reigns following the 2003 resignation of former party chair Mary Ellen Brennen.

“Business is so good and I have four kids all under the age of 8 years old; it’s just getting to be too much,” Buzbee said. “I’m proud of what we have been able to accomplish, but this is the best thing for me and for the party.”

Buzbee is credited with improving the Democratic Party’s training of precinct chairmen and streamlining the party organization. But his tenure also included some tough losses in the 2004 election as the once Democratic stronghold saw two countywide offices go to Republicans and a narrow victory for the popular Democratic Sheriff Gean Leonard.

“He was a good competing party chair and did what I know he thought was for the betterment of Galveston County,” said Chris Stevens, the chairman of the Galveston County Republican Party.

Buzbee said party leaders would meet Friday to decide on a new party chairman. He did not offer an indication as to who the favorite is only noting “there are plenty of people who are willing and will do a great job.”

Buzbee is a plaintiff’s attorney who served in the Gulf War as a Marine captain. He also served in Somalia and earned the Navy Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service.

It may just be me, but anytime I see a politician citing a desire to spend more time with his family, I wait for the other shoe to drop. So I will kinda watch this story for the next 6 months or so to see what(if anything) he is charged with.

There really isn't a Galveston County ping list. You can go to the GC Rep. Party web site at GalvestonCountyGOP.com and go to the forums section to sign up for them to keep up on local activities.

Daytime bump.

You must've really put the screws to this guy for him to resign after only 20 months :)

This, along with the switchers in Chambers Co., might suggest that reality is dawning in even the dimmest corners!

Jefferson Co. is goin to look even more isolated on the 06 map.
