seven dirty words raises [sic] eyebrows in college editorial

(New Haven-WTNH, Apr. 8, 2005 6:12 PM) _ An editorial in the campus newspaper at Southern Connecticut State University is causing quite a stir. People are talking not just about what was said, but about how it was said.

by News Channel 8's Chris Velardi Editorials are meant to create a buzz and an editorial in this week's Southern News is doing just that. The article criticizes the campus job fair and it really goes after military recruiters.

"This has gotten a stronger reaction than anything we've written in the Southern News in a long time," says editor-in-chief Kevin Miner, and for that reason he is proud.

Miner is the author of this week's editorial criticizing the school's job fair. The editorial has got people talking, but it's not the message that's created the buzz. It's Miner's choice of language.

"I tried to separate what he was saying from the way that he was saying it, and I had a hard time doing so," says Southern student Gary Holder-Winfield.

Miner uses a good deal of profanity in the article and saves his strongest comments for military recruiters, saying "tell them to go f*** themselves as you rip up their brochures and toss them in the garbage."

"Those seven dirty words get a reaction out of people and I wanted to get a reaction right away," says Miner.

"If you put profanity in there, you put some words in there that may have been unnecessary - it detracts," says journalism professor Frank Harris III. "That's all people are going to be talking about. That's all people will be remembering."

Professor Harris chairs Southern's Journalism Department and he's the newspaper's faculty advisor.

"The advisor's role at a newspaper - a student newspaper at a public university - is not to look over the shoulder of the students," he says.

Harris says it's okay for students to make mistakes, use poor judgement, which is what he believes happened here, as long as they learn from their experiences. So has this experience taught Kevin Miner anything? You be the judge.

"Well, in it's simplest, rawest form I wanted to get a strong reaction out of people and I did, And I wouldn't do anything differently."

Professor Harris says he told Miner he didn't agree with the type of language he used in the article. But overall he says he's proud of the paper's staff. He says they've done a nice job putting newspaper together and he doesn't want this to overshadow the work that the students have done.

"tell them to go f*** themselves as you rip up their brochures and toss them in the garbage."

Amazing that his freedom of speech allows him to encourage others to supress the freedom of others.

Profanity is often used by a weak mind to express itself in a stronger fashion....need I say more?

Here is the article, poorly written and tin foil in thinking.

Look for this "gleaming jewel" to be in charge of a major national newspaper sometime soon.....

I really wish the federal government would start pulling funds from colleges that don't support our recruiters. School administrators can't just kick them off campus so they use their favored brainwashed students to do their dirty work.

Freedom of speech only applies to liberals, and nobody else....

In defense of the Southern Conn. student body, they have a healthy percentage of active component vets, Reservists, Guardsmen and ROTCs, and a lot of them are already Iraq/Afghanistan/Noble Eagle vets. I hope for his sake that that smarmy little sh!t of an editor has an @ss that can cash all the checks his mouth writes....

What he didn’t tell me was that 160 American soldiers died in
Iraq that month, including former Southern student Tyanna
Avery-Felder, who died that very day.

A dumbass statement if there ever was one.

Does Miner really expect the recruiter to be informed of Avery-Felder's death within hours or minutes?

Miner sounds like immaturity on parade.

And I would do it all again if I hadn’t lost the zest of my youth since then.

I don't know about his "zest" but his writing and his "know-nothing" level of understanding of the world sure sound childish.

After reading his editorial, I want to run out and hire this guy. He would be a positive addition to any company. LOL.

I really wish the federal government would start pulling funds from colleges that don't support our recruiters.

I notice that the kid stopped cussing and got dead serious when he announced (with delight) that the judiciary is on the side of people like him:

And that fear of losing federal funding if Southern bars military recruiters? A red-herring: Federal judges have ruled not once but twice in the last six months that colleges and universities can bar recruiters from using school facilities without fear of losing federal funding. Problem solved.
