I forgot one of the all-time best childrens' books: The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. You could both enjoy reading that together. I recommend a good illustrated copy with pictures. It is a timeless and wonderful story.

I keep thinking I cannot remember any good books and then someone else names a book and I think that was one of my favourites.
I have one The Donkey Rustlers by Gerald Durrell which is a story based in Corfu

I have always wanted a secret garden, and when, as an adult, I discovered this (in movie form), I watched four versions of it. Even tho' it strays a bit from the book, I finally bought the Gennie James, Derek Jacobi, Billie Whitelaw, Colin Firth version (1987).
