Yahoo, White House

Posted on 04/08/2005 2:01:14 PM PDT by MJY1288

President Bush and the First Lady attended the "majestic" funeral for Pope John Paul II today in Rome. The President and the First Lady, as well as, Poppy Bush are heading for the Ranch as I'm typing this. The President spoke to the Press Pool on the way back from Rome.. It is a must read, I will post a link to the interview

Actually, it is considered impolite to actually make contact with the lady's hand.

When Chirac kissed Laura's hand, there were articles posted on appropriate hand kissing. So, the man is supposed to bring his lips to the lady's hand but not actually make contact.

I think the Queen is a Bush Babe. She always looks at him that way.

Remember the pictures of her climbing into the backseat of his pick up truck? She was smiling just like that.

She's greeting like one would greet an old friend...

In the First Grand Lady's book she tells about a visit from one on the royals to the compound in Maine....How they were never allowed in the kitchen on the palace, but he loved to cook and fixed great meals for all of them.....Somehow I can imagine royals feeling very comfortable at the ranch....It's not pretentious, but probably very relaxing for them.

I know all about contacts and sunglasses...especially on a windy day.

I just wish the frames had been smaller.

As I said earlier she may have a lot of peripheral vision so if that is the case she would need large lens to block out the sunlight.

That's a nice story about the royals wanting to cook. When I saw this Queen (Is her name Sophia?) climbing into the back of that pickup, I thought she must be a lot of fun to know.

She looks happy and friendly. She's from Spain right?

Yes. The Bush's like Spain....Jenna was an exchange student during high school. Stayed in a "normal" as in non-political home and shared a room with IIRC a seven year old girl. They have visited back and forth since....Think IIRC she also was given a trip for college graduation.

I'm sure the Bush's are great hosts...and are fun. The ranch would give them freedom in a safe environment to just kick back. Have noticed that more than one heads of states had bluejeans on by the end of their visits......What influence Texas has had on the world.....;^)

Hi there GretchenM

Not sure if you'll be interesting in these books .. but they are a series call ..

Dear America series

They are diaries from certain time periods in history

I picked up a few for my middle daughter who in 4th grade and who hates reading .. they are an easy read

My sons enjoyed Rudyard Kipling at that age. [Rikki Tikki Tavi] and others.
We read the Chronicles of Narnia and really enjoyed them.
I loved the boxcar books when I was that age.
But I have a passion for nonfiction, and when I was in the third grade started reading juvenile biographies. My sons also loved to read science type books, nonfiction books about animals. Almost anything would hold their attention. One loved reptiles and the other loved sea creatures [whales, sharks, dolphins and not in that order].

I'm not a big fan of fiction works in general, especially modern subject fiction. They just are not that well written. Didn't hold my sons' attention.

Might try Dickens' Christmas Carol later in the year. He is my favorite author bar none, and that particular story is fascinating even for younger readers.
A book that is challenging for your mentee, that you might have to help her with some of the words, might push her along to bigger and better things. She might love reading more if there were big ideas in the books, something important, something to make her think. Not just reading to be reading.

Librarians tend to withdraw books that are worn and damaged. If it is a classic book, like "Girl of the Limberlost" they would order another copy, perhaps with a library [more durable] binding.
Doesn't matter how wonderful the book is, if it is worn out it goes. May be replaced if they can find another edition, but it is gone.
