President Bush and the First Lady attended the "majestic" funeral for Pope John Paul II today in Rome. The President and the First Lady, as well as, Poppy Bush are heading for the Ranch as I'm typing this. The President spoke to the Press Pool on the way back from Rome.. W didn't wear sunglasses and wouldn't...no matter what. I wear contacts, too. Sunglasses, like chewing gum, are inappropriate.
Yes looking at the photo again I think I was being a little over generous to say that he is soley moving out of the way to allow Laura to lean over and as several have said it is very telling that he has his hands in his lap.

W and Laura don't share the same pair of eyes and brain receptors for visual images, or tear ducts. I don't know why she wore them. For me it is no big deal.

When I am inside with direct florcent lighting I have

Some people cannot sit in the sun without a shade of some sort - due to eye sensitivity. It is not an affectation or comfort as would be the chewing gum that you mentioned, but a medical necessity.
You know that Laura Bush always looks very well dressed and groomed, so she must have needed to cover her eyes, because she surely is not wearing them to imitate Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
I'll add my sentiments to that. Who would have thought that a Presidential press conference on AF1 would become a wonderfully inspiring, humble testament of a man's simple but genuine faith in God.

I think in someways it would be better if our Ministers just ran their own departments and did not have to worry about their constituencies as well. How can a Prime Minister have time to sort out problems in Sedgely when he has a country to run or Brown worry about Scottish issues when he is Chancellor of the whole of the United Kingdom; there must be a conflict of interest at times and the bottom line is that their Constituents cannot be properly represented.
