Egypt is astonished at Israel's tribute to nine Egyptian Jews recruited by the Jewish state to carry out "terrorist operations" in Cairo and Alexandria in the 1950s, the foreign minister said.

Israeli President Moshe Katsav last week honored the Egyptian Jews recruited by Israel as agents to ruin Cairo's rapprochement with the United States and Britain by firebombing sites frequented by foreigners the cities.

Israel hoped the attacks, which caused no casualties, would be blamed on local insurgents. But the young Zionist bombers were caught and confessed at public trials. Two were hanged and the rest served jail terms and immigrated to Israel.

The full article doesn't paint Israel as a terrorist state, even given the Reuters slant. The fake headline given by the zotted troll poisoned the whole thread, since I'm now firmly convinced that 90% of Freepers don't read the full article but react only to the headline.

By any objective measure, and certainly by the measures of the 1950s, this was a terrorist plot carried out by Israel. It's tame by today's standard's of destruction, but it wasn't right then.

Israel should not be honoring these men. It's the ultimate in hypocrisy. It was a scandal back then when it was pegged to the Israeli government.

I dunno, it's a stupid as if George W Bush gave medals to all those involved in the Mi Lai massacre.

Read the link I posted at #52. The Israelis haven't always been the good guys, and this incident ended up blowing up in their faces at the time.

I just can't see honoring the people that caused that mess today. I don't blame Egypt for being upset. The USA was their victim, too. It was not a good thing, and for Israel to honor the criminals who did it in 2005 is not smart.

I am well aware of the Lavon Affair. They were a few Israeli spies and they were serving their country honorably.

If the US honored spies and it offended Russia, should we not honor them?
