Anyone know why they mark bills at Best Buy?
There are marking pens that can differentiate currency paper. Most often used on $50 and up, but can be used on any bill.

The pen ink changes color if the paper is wood based. Genuine bills are printed on cotton rag.
They might even require ID and endorse the bill on the back. It is bad training or total non-training of the store clerks. Some stores are good at training, but some stores have to hire the untrainable.
Last time I worked as a cashier we were required to mark big bills ($50s & 100s) - there was also a LOT of counterfit (SP?) money being passed around the city I was in at the time though. The pens used mark yellow on regular paper and turn purple when used to mark bills.
