The problem for the University is that they can't admit that they only hired him because they thought he was Native American.

Gosh I dunno, shyster attorney David Lane. Maybe we should use the American Indian standards. Native Americans absolutely hate Scotch Irish Ward Churchill's guts and have been denouncing him for years as a complete fraud. He pretended to be a Native American on his resumes (copies are on the Internet) to get his job, ousting real Native American.

Why don't we ask the Native Americans themselves? There are rules set up by the tribes governing who can, and who cannot claim to be a Native American... Best I can tell he is an "honorary member" of a tribe in Oklahoma as explained below... This man claims to speak for Native Americans, and claims to want to be considered one, but IMHO by comparing THEIR ways of determining tribe membership to Naziism he threatens to destroy the very fabric that holds their community together - what a jerk!

Here's a question for ya. I really am part native American - how would I go about proving that? Just curious. I'm proud of my Cherokee heritage.

Nothing like picking up an argument and taking it backwards. Nobody is suggesting that the Nationalist Socialist standard of racial purity be applied, never did, and never will. Germans were just a little anal-retentive about that degree of purity, but it has not been much used here in the US since about the time of the Great Emancipation.

And the various tribes of Indians themselves are much more divergent than any definition of a "pure" race. A member of the Dakota nation, for example, is not very much like, say, a Cherokee, or a Ojibway, or a Navajo. The Indians themselves make some very sharp distinctions.

It is just that Ward Churchill is none of these things.

I really am part native American - how would I go about proving that.

I was once told that Native Americans have a corn-kernel-shaped depression in the back of each of their front two teeth. Take a piece of gum, press it into the back of your two fron teeth and look at the impression. I don't know if it is true, but I have heard it.

Are there any medical professionals out there that have ever heard such a thing?

Try this link from an earlier post. It has the federal guidelines. I'm looking into it for my daughter, who is 1/16 Cherokee, acording to family legend. She's going to use it when applying to college. If they question me, I'll just say, " If it was good enough for Ward, it's good enough for her " !
