When Dick Cheney tells you that you have gone too far, you know that you are way over the edge.
Last week, the Vice President told the New York Post's editorial board that Tom DeLay should not have jumped on the judges who refused to order that Terri Schiavo's feeding tube be reinserted.
He said he 'would have problems' with the DeLay plan to get revenge on the judges: 'I don't think that is appropriate.'
There's some skittishness in the party leadership about the Passion of the Tom, the fiery battle of the born again Texan to show he's being persecuted on ethics by a vast left wing conspiracy.
Some Republicans are wondering whether they need to pull a Trent Lott on Tom DeLay before he turns into Newt Gingrich, who famously led his party into the promised land but then had to be discarded when he became a petulant 'definer' of civilization.
Do they want Delay careening around Queeg style as they go into the 2006 election cycle? Mr.Delay is seeking sanctuary in Rome this week at the pope's funeral and he will hang on until the bitter end.
He got a thunderous round of applause from his House colleagues yesterday morning, showing once more that he has a strong hold on the loyalty of those who have benefited from his fat-cat friends and from his shrewdness in keeping them in the majority.
All the divisions that President Bush was able to bridge in 2004 are now bursting forth as different wings of the party joust.
Former Republican Senator John Danforth wrote an Op-Ed piece last week in the Times saying that his party 'has gone so far in adopting a sectarian agenda that it has become the political extension of a religious movement.'

Maureen - still waiting for your cute little hit piece about Sandy Berger and his crime of stealing top secret docs. Still waiting. Still waiting.
They smell blood in the water.....and that's because many conservatives are offering up chum.
Me thinks MoDo needs Midol.
They can smell all the blood they want - they still have ZERO ideas on which to campaign. Their ideas are just to oppose any Republican ideas. Oh wait, they endorse starvation of the disabled and infanticide. That will not win them any elections.
The Republicans had a list of ideas - the Contract for America. They have never been out of power since. The party with the ideas will win the elections. Period.
ouch....line of the day...nice work.
The moderate nobles of the Republican Party are just as ticked with Tom Delay, as the godless leftists are. The moderate nobles are embarrassed by Tom Delay and they love the NYTimes going after him as much as the leftists love trashing him. Politics and religion sure makes strange alliances.
The most important section of that article points out that Delay is not losing support among the House which is the only body with any power over him. Nor will he be hurt in Texas.
So I do not fear any jihad raised by the NYT, it is not like it has had any great successes lately other than adding new chapters to the distinguished list of frauds and plagarists.
As to the weak-kneed here what are you going to do? You find them on every issue.
Okay, I give up. What do those pics have to do with any of this?
MoDo dated Michael Douglas for a while. This was, of course, before he married Zeta-Jones. She's never quite gotten over it, which is partially why her columns are now nothing more than the rantings of a lonely bag. So it's practically a rule now that Zeta-Jones pictures are posted on every MoDo thread.
Maureen Dowd dated Michael Douglas back in the 1990s, but he dumped her for Catherine Zeta-Jones, and those two married, and have a kid. Rumor has it that she "went liberal" to try to get Michael Douglas back, if I remember correctly.
Oh my goodness...That one's hot. Wow. Sophia Loren reborn!
Maureen Dowd, Queen of the Harpies.
TS
Geez....and newgeezer isn't even a new geezer here on FR!
Not Midol. Estrogen.
Projection on Dowd's part? Does she only value colleagues and friends in terms of what they can do for her? Apparently it never occurs to her that many House members sincerely like and respect Delay.
