It's awesome to watch that stream of humanity stand hours on line for a simple glimpse of their "Papa". The 'boys' and I will be up at 3:30am, with a fresh box of tissues on coffee table.

I'll be up as well, although alone! I'll probably go to bed at 2 AM and have 2 hours sleep! I just can't miss the final goodbye to such a wonderful man. I still can't believe it when I see him lying there. I think we thought he'd never go.

It is truly humbling to see all the people in line in order to say goodbye to him. Particularly since they stopped the end of the line at 10:00 Rome time on Wednesday night. I heard some pundit say the line was 4 miles long?

I'll be doing the so-called "commentary" during the funeral for our local NBC affiliate, so I hope I do justice to the event. And BTW, CNN reported this morning that JPII's testament contained in a 2000 entry a desire to retire from the Petrine ministry. I just read the testament (in Italian), and that view of it is so nuts it's not even wrong. The Pontiff expresses over and over again that he entrusts his life and work into the hands of divine providence, and in the 2000 entry he says:

"Secondo i disegni della Provvidenza mi è stato dato di vivere nel difficile secolo che se ne sta andando nel passato, e ora nell’anno in cui l’età della mia vita giunge agli anni ottanta ('octogesima adveniens'), bisogna domandarsi se non sia il tempo di ripetere con il biblico Simeone 'Nunc dimittis.'"

What the Pontiff says is, now that he has been able to reach 80 yrs of age by means of Divine Providence, perhaps there has come the moment to say, in the words of the Biblical personage Simeon, "Nunc Dimittis" (i.e., "Now let your servant go in peace"). This statement by no means expresses a desire to resign from the Petrine Ministry. It expresses, subtly to be sure, a sense that he has reached a moment in life and history when the Lord may give him his reward for such service.

I rarely watch CNN but happened to turn it on this morning at just that point. Didn't the commentator express curiosity as to how the pope's possessions would be distributed? (I laughed so hard!) The MSM can't separate politics from religion.

I have no objection to you posting that lovely photo of a young Karol Wojtyla with rifle (another poster objected). It's a part of the Pope's history that is important for us to remember.
