U.S. Consultants on Papal Election
AP ^ | 4/6/04

"If ever there were a smoke-filled room, this is it."

-Democratic consultant Donna Brazile, who remembered the Latin masses from growing up Catholic in the South and her childhood wish to become a priest until learning women cannot be ordained.

---

"It's the ultimate whispering campaign with a very large confessional box."

-Chris Lehane, who worked for Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts and Wesley Clark in their unsuccessful bids for president in 2004.

---

"No one here would recognize it as a campaign. No technology. No bumper stickers. It's quiet, behind-the-scenes positioning."

-Jano Cabrera, who worked on the White House bids of Democrats Al Gore in 2000 and Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman in 2004.

---

A candidate should be "seen as not necessarily breaking from John Paul's general approach. You still have a conservative base making these selections."

-Lehane

---

"Be aware of geographic blocs, ideological blocs, more conservative, more liberal, anytime you have an election, the rules of electioneering come into play."

-Steve Jarding, who advised the presidential campaigns of former Democratic Sens. John Edwards of North Carolina and Bob Graham of Florida and is writing a book on rural politics.

I can hardly believe that these folks would venture commentary on such a matter. But then, they are D's.....

Thank God it's unlikely there will be an American pope this time out.

Thank God American political strategists have nothing to do with this process.

Sure she did. How old was she when she finally realized this? 23?

File under "how low can you go" OR "just how stupid can you be." Perhaps it's no wonder these folks are only capable of running losing campaigns.....and campaigns for losers.

The selection of a new Pope is not like picking a mayor. There's just no room for politics in such a solemn matter.

Puh-leeze. Listening to these heathens gas rhetorial about the conclave is like getting a lecture from Pol Pot about human rights. I'm a lapsed Methodist, and even I have more respect and reverence for the Vatican and Catholicism than some of these so-called 'Catholics'. My sister married a Catholic a few years ago - a good guy and warmly welcomed addition to our family - and I'm willing to wage that in the few hours I spent in his cathedral, I probably logged more heart-to-heart chat time with God than these posers have in the last fifteen years.
