DeLay blasts media over report of payments to family
CNN ^ | April 6, 2005 | Ted Barrett

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- House Majority Leader Tom DeLay defended his family Wednesday, saying newspaper articles about his wife and daughter and about his trip to Russia were "seedy" efforts by the "liberal media" to humiliate him.

The New York Times reported Wednesday that DeLay's wife and daughter have been paid more than $500,000 since 2001 by DeLay's political action and campaign committees, according to a detailed review of disclosure statements filed with the Federal Election Commission and separate fund-raising records in Texas.

The newspaper reports were the latest political controversies for DeLay. He has been admonished three times by the House Ethics Committee, and he faces possible indictment in Texas in connection with a campaign finance probe.

The Times said the payments to DeLay's wife, Christine DeLay, and his only child, Dani DeLay Ferro, were described in the disclosure forms as "fund-raising fees," "campaign management" or "payroll," with no additional details about how they earned the money.

"My wife and daughter have any right, just like any other American, to be employed and be compensated for their employment," DeLay said. "It's pretty disgusting, particularly when my wife and daughter are singled out and others are not, in similar situations in the Senate and as well as the House.

"But it's just another seedy attempt by the liberal media to embarrass me."

These attacks on Tom will prove fruitless. The conservative base will rise up to defend this great man.

So, he did it but now he's upset because they reported it?

I would like to know who these others are. If Delay continues to be hounded, I hope he names names.

So, he did it but now he's upset because they reported it?

And they didn't report when others did the same thing.

Which is true enough, but it doesn't change the fact that he is paying family members with campaign funds. Which may not be illegal, but it sure doesn't smell very good.

Not exactly. He is upset because it is reported so that the reader believes this is something unusual and possibly illegal. Bad Republicans doing bad things.

The NYSlimes failed to report that this is pretty much standard procedure for Senators (both sides of the aisle).

We all must remember to consider the source of any story.

Dear Tom DeLay: Please, please - the only response you should give these ijits is this picture addressed "to whom this may concern."

"The rules say if it's a legitimate organization that funds the trip and it's reported, it's legal."

And if its in a brown paper bag, obtained from buddhist monks it doesn't even get reported. Another left wing hatchet job. $500,000 for 2 people for 4+ years.... < $62,500 gross for each. How much did Tom Dassholes wife reap for lobbying???

$500,000 sounds like a lot right off the bat.

If you break that down over 4 years that's roughly $60,000 per year each.

Is that too much for a campaign wage?

Amen. Tom Delay is one of the most ethical men in Congress, and this MSM witchunt is disgusting.

His fellow Republicans better stand behind him and not chicken out.

When lib pols do this, nothing is said. I, for one, smell the same stink in the air as we had when Newt was Speaker....and it ain't comin' from our side. After watching the MSM and lib/dems (especially over the past 90 days), an agenda/concerted effort to get Delay is starting to take shape.

i agree that his wife and daughter have a right to be employed, but not by him.

his wife and daughter can go out and get their own jobs, like everyone else.

i objected when democrats employed their own families, and i object to this.

it's wrong, and should be illegal. period.

Tom Delay will not bend, he is one tough customer and he doesn't need anybody to stand up for him, and I doubt anyone will dare to abandone him.

It would be easier to name who the others aren't. Most Congresscritters pay their family members at prevailing rate for their campaigning.

If a Republican does it, it is illegal or unethical, and reported in such a way as to make the reader think it is smarmy. If a Democrat does it, it is legal and practiced by most on both sides of the aisle, with the details conveniently left out

The MSM at it's finest!!
