GULFPORT - In an emotional tribute at a memorial Mass, Terri Schiavo was praised Tuesday night as a remarkable woman, an inspiration to others and someone whose name will become a rallying cry to those who feel her death was an injustice.
''I am sorry, though, that pure love alone was not enough to keep you from harm,'' Schiavo's sister, Suzanne Vitadamo, told a crowd of more than 800 that overflowed and spilled outside the sanctuary of a St. Petersburg church Tuesday night.
''You are telling us not to be sad,'' Vitadamo said in a message to her sister, ``but to be happy because you are now free. You are a remarkable woman. Your smile brought us great joy. You have shown the world what perseverance and determination are all about.
''I miss you,'' Vitadamo said. ``We will forever be grateful to you.''

I'm equally confused by those of you who claim to treat Terri as your "hero"? What the heck is heroic about someone that cant act or even decide and has the same level of consciousnes as a tree? Is a tree heroic in your world?

Probably nobody at that funeral was in the mood to worry about precise word choice. They were grieving, as are many of us who were not there. But I am assuming they mean they have been inspired by the passionate fight that swirled around this innocent person and ended in her unjust death. As for me, my eyes have been opened to a terrible flaw in our system of justice, and I plan to do what I can to urge our lawmakers to correct it. So I guess you could say I too have been inspired.
We will not forget the injustice done here. America has killed an American citizen because a husband did not want her to live.
He came up with a "claim of her intent" and used it to commit murder. He allowed her to be used by the euthanasists to promote their "removal of the lessers" agenda. Her death was given to put the case in the legal precedents of "hearsay evidence can be used to kill".
Would Terri have wanted her life to be given for this purpose? Maybe some should ask Michael.
Terry was treated like trash and the parents were not even allowed to take the trash no others wanted. Why? Becaused she HAD TO DIE so that the precedent could be set to do the same to others.
There was a coordinated effort to kill Terry - we saw it, we realize what it means and we will not forget.
Many will scoff and say it is just the law, it is just the husband's right to do away with a vegetable, play down the precedents and the direction this takes America's handling of the weak, but many here (thank goodness) see the truth of this and will act and speak up.
Apparently you were inspired to lay bare your ignorance to all here....
Some so enjoyed mocking and calling others ignorant when they are the ones missing the whole importance of Terri's case.
They cannot or will not see. It does not change what is going on, but we sure cannot depend on them for help in our fight against such treatment of the elderly, and the incapacitated.
We will have to do it with those that see the travesty of this situation. If you do not see the travesty, you will not fight other travesties like this.
Many are to blame and I add my own question to the list of the guilty:
Where were the "feminists" in all this? They are not only complicit with the culture of death but of the de facto "ownership" of a woman by a man. Where have the feminists been all these years, when they could have been changing law in Florida and other states with lousy marriage laws. Michael Schiavo's HEARSAY based on his PAST marriage with Terri should never have been admissible, particularly in light of his common law marriage and children.
What a wretched state of affairs that this murder was committed "legally."

I guess they were inspired to ignore every other real issue in the world so that they could jump on the self righteous "culture of life" bandwagon. Meanwhile four more real american hero's have given their life in Iraq today. I guess the culture of life does not extend beyond out borders though.
And 16 in Afghanistan.
In the most recent episode of the carton series Southpark, Eric all of a sudden "remembers" that this "friend" Kenny would never want to be kept alive in persistant vegetative state. He remembered only after Kenny was revived after "24" hours of being dead and now the psp that Kenny left to Eric is no longer his. Angels are sent from Heaven to pull the plug on Kenny because he is needed in Heaven to fight off the invading hosts from Hell. Meanwhile the Devil sends a Demon to get the Republicans to do his bidding to keep Kenny alive.
He apparently is so certain that allowing Terry Schiavo to starve was the proper thing to do, that any person moved with sympathy for her was/is obviously an idiot.
He was wrong, yet inspired. Historically, a bad combination.

Not true. I question those who want to cannonize her for laying there oblivious to the world. I am sympathetic for her situation and would not want to be kept alive in the same situation (i.e., persistant vegetative state). I am also sympathethic sort of for those who believe in erring on the side of life.
I disagree totally with you people on the rule of law, and many of the facts of this case. Many of the so called facts were in fact total garbage like the reknown Dr Hammelsfahr with his nobel nomination. The court could have worked in this case has the Schindlers presented a credible case with credible witnesses, especially expert witneseses rather than putting all their efforts on a last minute series of challenges in various appeals courts.
