Name That Pope
2005-04-05 | Me

Posted on 04/05/2005 2:58:49 PM PDT by UnbelievingScumOnTheOtherSide

What papal name do you think the next pope will take?

As I search the list there have never been 3 popes taking the same name in a row. Bookies are giving 7-4 that the next pope will take John Paul III. There was never a double name before John Paul I. Not interested in this thread who will become Pope, just what name do you think he will take? Is there some Pope that the next Pope will want to pattern after besides John Paul II that any new Pope would see the Church in need of? If it were me I might take Urban, but somehow I don't think that that will be it.

Pius would be good, but I don't think we want a 13. All of the Pope Saints since the Reformation have been Piuses. (Pii? Piae?)

Benedict XVI works. I'm partial to Leo, my grandfather's name. He'd be Leo XIV. Paul VII would work, but Paul VI was this close -><- to being the anti-Christ. Nicholas V would be cool, if they go for that Ukranian guy who looks like Santa Claus.

Bad ideas:
Sixtus the Sixth.
Callistus III.
Eugene V (since Eugenics is going to be such a big issue).
Celestine sounds like Mama's Pizza.
Let's stay away from Luscious Lucius.
Could they have Sylvester Stallone introduce Adrian VII ?
Sissinius II

Fun Ones:
Conon II
Gelasius II

Most recent Pope Saints:
Saint Pius X (1903-1914)
Saint Pius IX (1846-1878)
Saint Pius V (1566-1572)
Saint Urban V (1362-1370)

How about Sixtus VI? It would sound hip for the young generation!

I'm hoping for another Cletus or Sylvester myself.

Sissinius II

That would tie your tongue worse than Sixtus VI.

He could just skip XIII. There is no John XVI or XX.

I also don't think you'll be the next pope.

And if anyone wanted to go for Sixtus, he could be Sixtus VI.

Yes, but that would bring us one step closer to the possiblity of Pope Sixtus IX. This must be prevented, especially while Clinton is still alive....

St. Peter (32-67)

So the claim is that Peter was pope from the death of Christ for the next 35 years? There wasn't even an organized Church at that point for there to be a pope of. There were a group of planted churches spread all over Asia Minor and eventually into Rome loosly held together with epistles and visits from the apostles and their teachers. Heck, it was well into that period that early Christians decided that Christ was for Gentiles as well as Jews.

In fact, there really wasn't a Roman Catholic Church until Constantine converted, was there? Before that, it was an underground, illegal movement.

I am curious about the early history of the Church and base my understanding on Acts and later books of the Bible. Is there stuff I'm missing? Was there an organized Church this early that had Peter as the pope?

My vote is for Si-cola; That would make him Pope Si-cola.

There was never a double name before John Paul I.

Of course not! The danger of someone being called Pope Billy Bob was to much to risk...
