What papal name do you think the next pope will take?
As I search the list there have never been 3 popes taking the same name in a row. Bookies are giving 7-4 that the next pope will take John Paul III. There was never a double name before John Paul I. Not interested in this thread who will become Pope, just what name do you think he will take? Is there some Pope that the next Pope will want to pattern after besides John Paul II that any new Pope would see the Church in need of? If it were me I might take Urban, but somehow I don't think that that will be it.
I remember it well. Same year intersections were invented.
Since I think the Nigerian Cardinal has the inside track, I think he would take one of the African Popes' names. Probably Victor, but maybe Gelasius or Miltiades.
No, it was Bob.
Arinze --> Pope Athanasius?
Pope Ari
That name has been deleted from the official lists of names, for a rather good reason.

It was Gregory the XVII
I googled and found this. It appears he was Spanish and died March 22, 2005. He was obviously familiar with St. Malachy's prophecies, because he claimed to be the "the glory of the olives".
You're right of course. But, we always called him Pope Bob of the martinis. What better "glory of the olives"?
Like the Queen Olives, myself.
You ought to be pulling for Pope Dionysius II.
Tradition has it that if another pope was to choose the name Peter it would signify the end of time.
I think he would be "the glory of the grape" IHSMR
ROTFL!! That one got my family howling!
Or Greece?
Sir SuziQ suggests Pope Pourri. ;o)
"never a double name before John Paul I..."
My understanding is that John Paul I took the double name because he so admired his two predicessors; John Paul II followed suit, and in fact was elected the same year after the short-lived reign of John Paul I.
I was in law school when John Paul the first died, so we had this discussion. I suggested Pope George Ringo.
OK, I should have read the whole thread first. BUT I really did suggest George Ringo in 1978 which puts me 26 1/2 years ahead of the thread! (One of the other legal eagles suggested John Paul John Paul at the time also).
