GOP Senators back Bowles to head UNC system
By ROB CHRISTENSEN, Staff Writer
Republicans in the state Senate, of all people, are lobbying to make Bill Clinton's former chief of staff, Erskine Bowles, the next president of the University of North Carolina system.
The Senate GOP caucus has written to state leaders saying the next time there is a change in the UNC presidency, "we would strongly support Mr. Erskine Bowles for the position."
Apparently the GOP is floating the name of Bowles, a two-time Democratic Senate candidate and Charlotte investment banker, as a way to send a message to President Molly Broad.
Sen. Robert Pittenger of Charlotte said the GOP decided to write the letter after being dissatisfied with the answers given by Broad at a recent legislative committee meeting.
Bowles' name had previously been rumored for the UNC post even though there is no vacancy.
"This underscored the need I feel that they have somebody with business acumen to run that institution," Pittenger said.

A good way to keep Bowles from running for anything in the future?

Has Bowles been talking about running for governor of NC?
I think Bowles said his political career is over with.
This ruins my day.
From the same article:
Edwards: 'No' on Rice
Former U.S. Sen. John Edwards said last week that if he had been in the Senate he would have voted against confirmation of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.
Edwards, in an interview on the Fox Network's "Hannity & Colmes" show, said he would have voted against Rice because "of the role she played in the lead-up to the Iraq war and some of the things that she said publicly that turned out not to be true."
Edwards said his opposition to Gonzales was based on his memo saying some anti-torture laws don't apply to foreigners held overseas. Edwards said the memo "sends exactly the wrong signal to the rest of the world."
Business acumen? I thought he was being investigated by the state of Conn. for mishandling their state funds.
If 'ifs' and 'buts' were candies and nuts, we'd all have a wonderful Christmas.
He's a 'Rat. If his lips moved...[fill in the rest].
ok--so they have a beef with Broad. Other than further political aspirations by Bowles, what could the GOP motive be?
9/21/2004: Connecticut settles suit with Forstmann Little
SETTLEMENT
In a deal that left both sides claiming victory, the New York investment firm Forstmann Little & Co. has agreed to pay Connecticut's pension fund $15 million to resolve a lawsuit that charged the company with breaching its contract with the state.
The suit had included as defendants Charlotte investment businessman Erskine Bowles, once a Forstmann partner and now a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate. The state of Connecticut sued Forstmann over investments it claims cost the state pension fund $125 million. In July, a Connecticut jury decided Forstmann had breached its contract with the state but awarded no damages. The state appealed. Monday's settlement ends the legal proceedings.
"Forstmann Little had a complete victory in the contract litigation," the company said in a statement. "Winners of lawsuits do not appeal."
Connecticut Treasurer Denise Nappier, meanwhile, called it "a landmark victory" for the state.
Bowles was named in the suit, but his name rarely came up in the trial.
A university presidency can be used as a political position, and in many ways it makes Bowles more dangerous than if he had managed to get himself elected.
I think this is very shortsighted. UNC used to have an excellent reputation as a conservative college, but it has changed with the times. Putting Bowles in charge of educating future generations of voters and political leaders would only accelerate the process.
Did you see the article a few days ago talkingabout the dust-up between Kerry and Edwards?. Kerry has been telling friend privately that Breckboy took the Liebermam pledge, but Johnnyboy has said he didn't, and that he told Kerry he wouldn't..I think those two are heading for a major dust-up..BTW, has Edwards claimed credit for the Tarheel's NCAA win..
And while this is only a proposal, it's worse than him just being the president of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
What the article means by the "UNC system" is actually all 16 public colleges or universities in the state!
(sorry about the image size!)
(BTW, are your going to update your 2006 Senate race page?)
Yep, that's about the size of it.

Former Democratic candidate for vice president John Edwards, left, his wife, Elizabeth, second from right, and children, Jack, center front, and Emma Claire, leave the arena after North Carolina beat Illinois, 75-70, in the NCAA championship game Monday, April 4, 2005, in St. Louis.
Might not be a bad trade-off then.
