A turn to the right... 10 minutes with nationally syndicated talk-show host Michael Medved
JWR ^ | 4-5-05 | Bill Steigerwald

Nationally syndicated talk-show host Michael Medved will be broadcasting live Monday and Tuesday from Grove City College, which is conducting a two-day conference on the dismal past and unpromising future of the 40-year federal war on poverty.

A veteran critic of Hollywood's films, destructive cultural messages and liberal politics, Medved is the former co-host of PBS' "Sneak Previews" and best-selling author of such books as "Hollywood vs. America."

His latest book is "Right Turns: Unconventional Lessons from a Controversial Life" (Click HERE to purchase. Sales help fund JWR.) A former 1960s liberal turned "impassioned conservative," I talked to him Wednesday by telephone from his Seattle home:

Q: You were once a liberal. What was it that made you "defect" to conservatism?

A: Well (laughs), it basically takes over 400 pages to explain with any integrity. But in short, I will tell you that it was a gradual process. There was no "Road to Damascus" experience. It was an evolution, not a revolution. One of the key episodes for me was the conclusion of the Vietnam War, because I had been very involved with the anti-war movement and all those sunny predictions that as soon as America left Vietnam then peace would reign and the killing would stop.

...There were literally millions of people who died in Vietnam and Cambodia as a result of America's withdrawal. It seemed to me that far from the promises of the peace movement — that American withdrawal from the war would reduce the total level of suffering and killing — there's very good indication that the way we withdrew caused a tremendous increase in human suffering.

It's amazing how blind Lefties are to this particular bit of history. My experience is that when you point it out, they Orwellianly deny it happened like that at all.

I read Medved's book Right Turns. It was a good read.

His life journey is very similar to mine, which I guess is why I could relate.

I grew up in the 60s and despite having strict church going parents, I soon developed a very anti-establishment (destructive) attitude, rejecting my dad's wisdom and guidance, not to mention his respect of Christianity.

By the end of the 70s, I realized how foolish I had been, and how self-absorbed the 60s counter culture icons had been. I quickly gravitated toward Ronald Reagan's sunny conservative optimism and began to notice what it was that made America such a great place of hope and wealth.

It's funny. To this day I love rock n roll, even some ( emphasize some) of the newer angst-obsessed jerk bands. But I now dogmatically believe that it is the conservative attitudes and family structures which provide the fertile ground for rock n rollers to develop, not to mention that it is the conservative principals of national strength, pride, lower regulations, and business which makes America what it is -- the greatest country in the history.

The show’s OK and Michael is definitely one of the good guys. His knowledge of historical facts is astounding. Sometimes, however, I tire of his “Here’s my proposition. If you disagree, call me.” format.

He’s also a bit heavy on matters related to Israel. I think he forgets sometimes just how few practicing Jews there are in his audience. Most of the rest of us are sympathetic, but can only take so much discussion of Jewish religious matters before reaching for the dial. The only way you can be a guest on his show is be a raving leftist lunatic professor or a Rabbi with a funky name like Shmoolie (sp). The lunatic professors are far more entertaining.

"a gay couple — assuming that they were stable, honorable, positive public citizens"

This is where Medved and I disagree.
I don't see a "gay couple" which I think is a mischaracterization and "stability" in a realtionship when it comes to a homosexual couple. The partnership, in of itself, is based on sin and immorality contrary to God and nature; and hence how it could EVER be fruitful(which it can't) and successful which is inherently unlikely is hardly an environment for children to grow up in. American married couples need to step up to the plate and adopt!

I don't get to listen to Medved often but his program is sure better than the alternatives Hannity or "Dr." Laura(and how she gets away with passing herself off as some kind of educated "counselor" getting her degree in what phys ed is laughable!) She couldn't keep her marriage together but she's counseling others and letting her mother die without reconciling is outrageous!

Medved is certainly deeper than hannity, but so is the puddle in my driveway after a light shower.

I've always thought that Medved doesn't talk about Jewish issues or Israel very much--not that I would mind if he did talk about it more.
