Bush to attend funeral for Pope John Paul II

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President George W. Bush and first lady Laura Bush will attend the Vatican funeral for Pope John Paul II, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said.

"The president and Mrs Bush plan to attend the funeral of Pope John Paul II," which is set for Friday, McClellan told reporters.

Asked whether former presidents George Bush and Bill Clinton would be part of the US delegation to the funeral, McClellan said the White House was "still finalizing" the list and would say more later in the day.

On Saturday, Bush hailed the pope as "one of history's great moral leaders" and "a hero for the ages."

Cardinals who convened Monday for the first time since the pontiff's death confirmed that he would be buried in St Peter's Basilica, in keeping with tradition, rather than his native Poland.

Announcing details of the funeral arrangements, Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said the requiem mass at 10:00 am (0800 GMT) would be celebrated by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the Vatican's doctrinal enforcer and a possible successor.

Around 200 state and religious leaders are expected to attend the funeral, which Italian authorities say will draw up to two million mourners to Rome.

"That being said, Bush, why don't you lead a delegation of Border Patrol Agents to our Border states and protect this country?

You know, with that kind of passion for protecting the borders, you would do wonders for some of us on this forum if you would seriously joining the newly formed group of 'minutemen' that have gathered in Arizona - doing something about the problem rather than blasting Bush for what you could do yourself. How 'bout it?

I can stomach Clinton going in the delegation, but Gerald "The Soviets do not dominate Poland" Ford, or Jimmy Carter better not be.

Ford is not in good enough health, I suspect.

Jimmy is probably busy trying to build a house somewhere. Noble cause, but he had a chance to build a whole economy once and didn't.

I just wish someone would replay the video of Bubba's visit to the Pope. It was after the Monica scandal. He was walking in FRONT of the Pope and looking at all the artwork in the Vatican like he was a tourist in a museum. The pope was left behind and ignore like an old man holding up the tour. So disrespectful.

Security and safety is a HUGE issue. I just pray that no evil is allowed to prevail. This is a dangerous time.

There are reports out about Clinton attending. Plus is only logical. There will be cameras there. And a great place to set up his book stand.

ABSOLUTELY!!!

There are several men at my company who, through my efforts(financial support and working their hours), will be able to join the minutemen for several days this month. Being a female, it is a bit dangerous for me, but, having quit donating to Republicans until the border question is resolved, I support the minutemen financially.

I have written letters to my local paper, my congressmen, I have telephone Homeland Security in Austin, Texas.

I do more than Gripe and Moan, I expect the President to do more than ignore the problem!!!

You're right EagleUSA.

What really chaps me, is the minutemen are doing this whole Nation a service; attention needs to be brought to the border situation.

I don't want to sound cold-hearted, but the news coverage of the Popes death has been second by second, there is NO OTHER NEWS! The Pope is gone from this earth, and barring a miracle he is NOT going to get up and walk....so why doesn't the media give the minutemen 30 seconds, but oh, no, the Pope is dead, they must cover it ad nauseum!

The minutemen are getting NO COVERAGE, while our President is going to Rome for a PHOTO OP.

Perhaps if you are not interested in the new concerning the Pope's death, you should avoid posted that are titled with that topic.

To: Bahbah; All

Fox News is saying that the U.S. delegation will be small, and the names of those going, other than the Prez and First Lady, have not yet been released.

Sounds to me like Clinton was violating protocol (ONCE AGAIN) and trying to get himself invited.

I hope he is told to stay home.

Thanks, CM. It was on Fox that I heard that his awfulness would be in the group, along with '41. I guess they jumped the gun.

I POSTED because the thread was about PRESIDENT BUSH leading a delegation to Rome, when he should be here taking care of his own dang Country!

Sorry if you find my opinion, and my freedom to post that opinion, offensive.

Or maybe, eeeewwwwww, your information is more current than mine! How disgusting to think that someone so sleazy and amoral should be attending the funeral of the Holy Father. Let's hope I'm correct and not you.
