"I have heard from rumour that one French Bishop or Cardinal that is likely to be considered as next pope is from Jewish descent. If that is the case, and if he is elected, he would fit into Gloria Olivae perfectly. Look at Paul's Letter to the Romans, Chapter 11:17-24. Paul describes God's possessors of the Covenant, Abraham's descendants, as a cultivated olive tree. Gentile Christians are the wild olive branch from a wild olive tree, that has been grafted onto the original cultivated olive tree. Neither one, either Jew or Gentile, is considered better than the other, since Paul says neither group supports the roots."

http://www.crawford2000.co.uk/popes_proph.htm

"De Gloria Olivae/From the Glory of the Olives: The Order of Saint Benedict has claimed that this pope will come from their ranks. Saint Benedict himself prophesied that before the end of the world his Order, known also as the Olivetans, will triumphantly lead the Catholic Church in its fight against evil."

http://www.dayofgod.net/Malachy/malachy.htm

"Some Catholic scholars insist that St. Malachy never saw the prophecies which bear his name, and the official Church attitude holds that they are a forgery dating from the 16th century. If hindsight was responsible for the early predictions, then the accuracy of the predictions should have decreased sharply after 1600, But consider what Malachy foresaw for some later pontiffs-all of whom reigned during the 20th century."

[I've also read that the 112th and final Pope in the prophecy was actually added in 1823 as the list of future Popes seemed to be winding down by 2000 AD. The cheap dodge for this is that after the Glory of the Olives, there will be any number of other, unforetold Popes, with Peter the Roman being the last one at some undetermined time in the future]

POPE: THE EXPECTATIONS OF THE CONCLAVE'S CARDINALS
http://www.agi.it/english/news.pl?doc=200504041818-1181-RT1-CRO-0-NF11&page=0&id=agionline-eng.oggitalia http://www.agi.it/english/news.pl?doc=200504041818-1181-RT1-CRO-0-NF11&page=0&id=agionline-eng.oggitalia

(AGI/REUTERS) - Rome, April 4 - John Paul's successor will be another conservative, say Australian cardinal George Pell to reassure the traditionalists. The next head of the Catholic church will have to be elected from those who have a certain experience, rather than a member of the Curia, said Swiss cardinal Henri Schwery. Latin America should have a certain say in the selection of the new Pope. Each of the 117 cardinals of the conclave arrives in with a perfect Pope profile in mind, some even have a name in mind. Pell who arrived in Rome yesterday said in a radio interview with 'Abc' that he is certain that the candidate will be a traditionalist so that he can pursue the theological issues of Pope Wojtyla. "I am fairly certain that on a general level the loyalty to the basic teachings of Catholicism are absolutely incontestable", said the prelate, "There will be a debate, a discussion on what is the best way to present Christ's message and catholic life". "But", he added, "I do not believe that those in the know expect a radical change to be possible". (AGI) 041818 APR 05

His Profound and Lasting Impact
Newsday
http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/world/ny-popelegacy,0,417817.story

Despite all the pope's activities, some Catholics, even priests and nuns, angrily dismiss him. "Some of my liberal friends just say he's a disaster and can see nothing good that he's done," said the Rev. Richard McBrien, a theology professor at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana... Despite John Paul's faithfulness to those theological themes, his critics in the media and in the pews have indeed harped on the conventional critique, especially on his views of women's roles in the church and his approach to collegiality, sharing leadership of the church with his brother bishops. They argue that, far from following the path of collegiality, John Paul has kept a tight rein on the bishops, beginning with their selection. "He's left the Catholic Church with probably the worst crop of bishops it's had in centuries," Notre Dame's McBrien said. "He has followed a rigid pattern of picking people who are ideologically in his line of thought and utterly loyal... That's going to be his most serious negative legacy."

By tradition the Pope is elected from among the Cardinals, but by tradition only.  It lies within the power of the College of Cardinals to elect anybody: an unknown, humble priest, a layman, even a married man if they so wish, to become the Supreme Pontiff.  It was in 1059 that a Council, called by Nicholas II, declared: “If there is to be found in the Roman Church a subject fitted to govern it, let him be of the clergy; otherwise application should be made to another church.”  A Pope, then, may be chosen from outside the Dioceses of Rome, and a layman may be elected, as long as he caused to be conferred upon himself all the necessary ordinations after his election.  In point of fact, since the decree of 1059, no layman has been elected Pope, and since the time of Urban VI, 1378, who when elected, was Archbishop of Bari, and not a Cardinal, all the Popes have been chosen from the College of Cardinals.

http://www.osv.com/catholicalmanac/conclave.asp

The last election not held in the Vatican (the Sistine Chapel) was in 1846 (Pius IX), which took place at the Quirinal Palace. The last pope not a cardinal at the time of his election was Urban VI (1378-1389); the last by compromise was John XXII (r. 1316-1334); and the last by acclamation was Gregory XV (1621-1623).

"India has five cardinals; but only three of them have voting rights. Two of them -- Cardinal Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy and Cardinal Simon Ignatius Pimenta -- have lost the right to participate in the conclave as they are above 80. Only cardinals below the age of 80 have the right to elect the Pope."

Crucial job awaits Cardinal Keeler at papal conclave

"Whereas Keeler has a low-key style publicly and a centrist reputation, there are other American cardinals with more clearly defined ideologies who are expected to take more of a lead in the conclave. Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles is an outspoken advocate for decentralizing church polices, and Cardinal Francis George of Chicago is known internationally for his firm alignment with traditionalists. Cardinal Theodore McCarrick of Washington, D.C., is often regarded as the best known internationally among the 11 American cardinals, and the cleric who most tries to bridge the gap between American Catholics and the Vatican."

Conclave of cardinals to pick successor

"Under John Paul II the college of cardinals has become so internationalised and decentralised that the next Pope could come from anywhere in the world, although there is a powerful sentiment to return to tradition and elect an Italian. If this were to happen, strong candidates would include archbishops Dionigi Tettamanzi, 70, of Milan, Angelo Scola, 63, of Venice, Tarcisio Bertone, 70, of Genoa, Angelo Sodano, 77, the Vatican secretary of state, and Giovanni Battista Re, 71, the head of the Vatican congregation."

If God meant for us to know the future, he would have given it to us IMO.

Bible even says that Christ will return like a theif in the night. Meaning he will surprise everyone.

I think it is a human need to get an edge, and outside of What Mary told Bernadette, I don't think there are too many more legitimate tellings of future events.

PS, the winner lottery number for the next time Califonria gets a pot over 100 million will be 52 2 14 23 17 44. LOL

Cardinal Husar had been hinting as much. It would drive the Chinese Communists insane among others.

But if they are genuinely interested in continuing to address the issues with Islam and the questions of trying to heal the breach with the Orthodox (and even addressing the bringing home of parts of the Anglican Communion) then Cardinal Arinze is the clearly the best candidate. With Anglican Archbishop Akinola of Nigeria the de facto head of conservative Anglicans worldwide it could be an awesome opportunity. Also, Cardinal Arinze has very good relationships with a number of Eastern Orthodox hierarchs and theologians.

If their concern is geopolitical, they will not elect an Italian or a Latin American if they have a Russian in mind (or a Ukrainian cardinal for that matter).

If they think bio-ethical concerns are most important, they will turn to Cardinal Scola and also embrace the return to an Italian.

My half-penny's worth of conjecture...

"But it will be God who chooses the next Pope."

Exactly! We Catholics should simply pray that God's will be done. This is not a horse race.
