Bush Team, West Wing at War Again
US News- Washington Whispers ^ | 04/11/05 | Paul Bedard

Posted on 04/03/2005 11:15:18 AM PDT by Pokey78

White House and GOP insiders say they feel like suckers after falsely believing President Bush 's re-election would be met with acceptance from Hollywood. Their tip: Last month's West Wing episode in which the Alan Alda character blasted pols who use religion for political advantage. "Just when Hollywood was trying to get back in our good graces," said one insider, "they used that offensive script." Bushies think the script was targeting their boss. But Lawrence O'Donnell, a former Democratic Hill staffer, tells us he was just writing a good story, and he adds that the Alda character is a Republican presidential candidate. Then he let Bush have it. "If the White House worries that when that subject comes up it is somehow aimed at the president, well, you know, who told them to use religion in campaigning so much?" asks O'Donnell. "There's no one in our modern political history who has used his religiosity more deliberately and actively and falsely in campaigning than George Bush, second only to . . . Bill Clinton ."

O'Donnell hasn't any credibility with me, after his outbursts last year. What a loon...

Whatever happened to Larry O'Donnell? He was a reg on the talking head circuit till his double-meltdown on "Scarborough Country" and now you can't find his smirking visage anywhere.

Did he get banned or something? Anybody know?

My thoughts exactly! I haven't seen one single episode of West Wing, and don't plan to, I just don't watch much "regular" TV. There are too many other good shows to watch on A&E, History Channel, Discovery Channel, The Learning Channel and Animal Planet!

As for Hollywood trying to get into the administration's good graces - HAH!

Why would anyine watch that POS? It portrays the scumbag dems as rational, sensitive people and the good guys as the opposite. And, I don't believe that anyone in Washington would expect the propagandists in Hollywood to change the stripe down their backs.

This is a joke, right? NOBODY in the Bush White House could be that stupid or we are in a lot of trouble.

I seriously doubt anyone in the White House wastes their time watching each episode of West Wing in order to report the contents. The show's producers only "wish" the real White House paid even half that much attention.

But Lawrence O'Donnell, a former Democratic Hill staffer, tells us he was just writing a good story

Maybe he should stick with a storyline he's familiar with...one where a journalist loses his "crackers" on national TV and won't quit yelling at the other guest and the host.

By the way, I caught a couple of the episodes (on TNT?) where Jimmy Smits, the Democrat candidate, is running against Alan Alda who is as much a Republican as Barbra Streisand. NO WAY would a liberal, athiest Republican end up winning a primary and becoming a GOP Presidential candidate, yet that's what 'West Wing' would have people believe. It's tough to suspend disbelief that much, and the show is accordingly that difficult to watch.

I think the show is on its death bed anyway. A change in (the fictional) administration will mean a change in all the characters, and this was a character-driven show far more than it was an "inside politics" show.

I admit, I watched it.

I found the characterizations and overall plot to be highly improbable. It's still very clear that West Wing is written by outsiders looking in on Republicans, rather than very sympathetically portraying them as they do with Democrats. In the dialog it was annoying as I found myself constantly having to remark "he could never say that", and "that is what Democrats wish or think we say"

The show is continuing as a weak reflection of the Clinton years, written by washed up Clinton lackeys. This is a pity, since there are lots of interesting and dramatic stories that could be told about conservatives and the challenges they have faced.

"GOP insiders say they feel like suckers after falsely believing President Bush 's re-election would be met with acceptance from Hollywood."

Where do these people come up with this stuff. I loved the headline - war in the west wing again - like they know anything. It's just the same thing - any little riff is seen as some catostrophic upheaval - a bunch of drama queens - if you ask me.

And if anybody was "suckered" into believing this President would change any of his policies toward Hollyweird - then they are fooling themselves - as usual.
