BEDFORD - The Bedford Public Library locked its doors Wednesday night -- apparently the first public library to do so in the state.
And patrons of the Boys Ranch Activity Center have only until Friday -- while employees tie up loose ends -- before that community favorite is also closed.
No one knows when they might reopen.
But the fate of the city's senior center -- also a victim of the City Council's budget cuts this week -- may hang on the generosity of Hurst, which shares the facility with Bedford.
"We will do what we can to keep the center open at least until October," Hurst City Manager Allan Weegar said.
On Tuesday, the Bedford City Council slashed $2.6 million from the budget in response to residents' narrow approval of a property tax rollback March 5.
Officials said cuts were essential to the city's $24.8 million budget after the rollback sliced the tax rate to 40 cents per $100 of assessed property value from 49.5 cents. To meet the shortfall, the council also shut down Bedford Splash aquatic center and Central Pool, and will lay off 51 employees, officials said.

Perhaps a clean sweep of said council would be in order.
This is NOT President Bushs fault!
They are; they could have cut back the programs that the tax increase (which was rolled back) was going to fund. Instead, they're keeping those programs and cutting the ones which shouldn't have been affected.
Definitely time to throw the buggers out.
Which programs would that be? New fire engine or ambulance? They were cut. The scare tactics became reality.
Nice facility. I used to play there as a kid when it was abandoned back in the 70's. Had a huge pond. Lots of Motorbike trails and tons of spare 2x4s for building rafts to take on the pond.
The councils salery increase was spared of course.
Swimming pools and senior centers are not essential governement services. Seem like a good place to make cuts if they are needed. What programs would you have cut?
The Department of Silly Walks.
