Mahony Flies To Rome For Solemnities, Conclave
By K. Connie Kang
Times Staff Writer
April 2, 2005
"As he prepared to fly to Rome to probably attend the funeral of the current pope and help elect a new one, Cardinal Roger M. Mahony of Los Angeles asked for spiritual help to get through the momentous events ahead.
"I ask all the people in Southern California to pray for all the cardinals — that we listen wisely to God's voice, the Holy Spirit, and that we choose wisely the next shepherd of the universal church," Mahony told reporters Friday night at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.
Mahony had celebrated a noon and a 5 p.m. Mass before heading to LAX and ... (Snip) ...then Rome."
"As with many of the other cardinals who will choose a successor to John Paul II, this would be Mahony's first participation in such a conclave. He described himself as being "very excited but also nervous."
Mahony, whose diocese includes an estimated 5 million Roman Catholics in Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, said the pope had been given a "very special grace" to know that death was near.
"We hear so often about people who are killed instantly ... and have no time to prepare for the greatest moment of our lives — passing from this life into eternal life," Mahony said.
In Rome, he and other cardinals from around the world will be asked to set dates for nine funeral Masses, Mahony said. He said the pope's burial should take place between the fourth and sixth day after his death..." >> Snip
"...Only the Holy Spirit knows how that will unfold, he said, declining to speculate on candidates..."

I am not even a Catholic, but I worry about this change every time it happens. If we get a liberal Pope, it's over! All the world needs is somebody to change Gods law to their own, and we get Homo marriage, more Terri starvations, etc. I try to have faith that you don't get to be a Cardinal by making it up as you go along, but you just don't know these days. Kinda like a president picking a judge. You don't know what you get till years later. It seemed weird last week to have debate over Terri's murder, with half the priests saying kill her and the Pope saying "No Way"! Can't they tie them up and whip them or something. I can understand Baptist's disagreeing, but Catholics have a church government. Seems like if you ordain someone, you could un-ordain them. That guy that used to be a congresscritter is practically a commie(can't remember his name). Course anybody that is a Jesuit, is anyway. They are the ones that get killed in these 3rd world countries for fomenting revolution.

Well, I'm afraid I might bear false witness. Perhaps he has a lousy sense of architecture but a good heart for selecting Popes. I don't know.

You two have had to suffer through trolls, pledge breaks, and MSM who racing to announce first. You two have done a great job. A sad duty, but a duty that has been thankfully shared with others, a community building experience, something that FreeRepublic needs these days.
Thank you. I'm going to donate $86 to the Freepathon in your honor, and in honor of the Pope who so changed the world.

That guy that used to be a congresscritter is practically a commie(can't remember his name). From Massachusetts. He was on Fox News tonight [spit]
His name is Drinan and as I understand it, it was John Paul the Great who told him to leave the Congress. [sweet]

He sure has. I was always fascinated with the idea of having a Pope as a child. We are Anglicans yet followed many Catholic traditions, such as not eating meat on Fridays, fasting before mass, etc.
When I heard that Catholics actually could eat meat on Fridays, I brought that up with my Mother. What kid wants to eat meat on Fridays?
LOL, my Mother's response was "Good for them. We will continue not eating meat on Fridays."
Thanks for all the fun Mother, and hope you're getting ready to meet the Wonderful Holy Pontiff. Thinking of you and Dad. Rest in peace.

Relax.
Pope's cannot change the Church in ways that you're worrying needlessly about.

I feel likewise, concerning ALL the liberal cardinals. Take comfort, however, in the fact that the Holy Spirit will make His choice known. Remember that it's His show, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.
BTW, I may be wrong (probably am), but my pick for the last few years has been Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn.

At this writing I don't know whether the Pope has passed or not. He is someone that I have admired very much even though I am Episcopal.
This Pope has given so much to Christianity - not just the Catholic Church, but to all Christians and this world will be a sadder place for his going. He hasn't been just the Catholic Pope but a leader of Christians everywhere.
The person that becomes the next Pope will have very big shoes to fill. I pray that he will be able to carry forth the work of Pope Paul.
People fail to realize that as Western Christians, our faith is descended from that first church which we have come to know as the Holy Catholic Church and that no matter what we call ourselves, whether Lutheran, Episcopal, Baptist, Pentecostal, we are all children of Christ - all followers of the man that was deemed the Rock - St. Peter.
May GOD bless the Pope and ease his way into heaven to continue in his worship and praise of GOD, the Father, GOD, the Holy Ghost and GOD, the Son - Jesus Christ. Amen.
