Windmill Crippled in High Winds (Pics)
GoGov.com ^ | April 1, 2005 | GoGov

Tower workers inspecting the damage to the wind mill said the 50,000 pound wind turbine would be left as is and to fall on its own. Removing it, they said, would be too dangerous. The wind farm is located 10 miles north of Palm Springs, California.

Why is that one damaged and not the others? Did something BIG hit it?

I wonder if it seized up and stopped turning?

That wreckage could hang for a long time like that.

That doesn't sound right. Some kind of crane hoisted that bitch up. Call the crane back and pull it down before it tumbles and takes out its neighbor.

Who's in charge out there? Gettim on the blower.

Who's in charge out there?

I'll ask them tonight. Only reporting what I was told this morning.

I just sent this letter to the Dallas Morning News.

Those windmills of the Alta Monta Valley in California produced about 8% of California's electricity. We could kill many birds with this particular alternate energy source!

The Answer is Blowin’ in the Wind

September 1991 “Scientific American” was titled “Energy for Planet Earth”. One paper suggested building 4 million windmills on the Plains States. These windmills would supply ALL the electrical needs for the United States. All coal, gas, oil and nuclear power plants could be decommissioned.

TXU built prototype windmills near Valley Ranch. They were moved to West Texas as part of an operational wind farm. Building these windmills would create millions of jobs. The windmill blades are the size of a 737 wing. Building those blades would create jobs and wealth for our area aerospace industries. The towers and generators would add to our economy.

How to fund this project? I estimated $500,000 per windmill for a total cost of $2 Trillion dollars. Social Security’s surplus exceeds $2 Trillion. Invest these funds in 5% 30 year utility bonds and the interest would be more than $2.5 Trillion and the bonds would be repaid at the end of 30 years. This would be real cash flow. Will this work? We bailed out the Auto Industry. The principle and interest was paid and it constituted real cashflow and a profit for the US Treasury!

Yeah, looks like the bearing seized and the inertia of the multi-ton rotor torqued the head right off the tower.

My guess is that the controls that cause the blades to "free-wheel" (like shifting into neutral) didn't work....

We could build OODLES of nuclear reactors for that much and make even more of a killing.

Wind farm? So that`s how they make wind! My father lied to me! He said wind is from trees sneezing.

Only if your willing to go without electricity 60% of the time.

Yeah, and I doubt you could build the kind of turbines pictured in this thread for $500,000 each, either. Heck, it probably costs nearly that much to ERECT each of them.

Notice there are few trees there. That's the only way they can get wind--make it themselves.

Interesting.

Tomorrow I go to an info meeting to learn about the local plan to build 80 of those 400' suckers around my house.
