Terri Schiavo .. and Uncle Tom's Cabin
vanity of an eccentric mind | April 1, 2005 | Linda Martinez

Posted on 04/01/2005 8:15:38 AM PST by eccentric

The daughter of Bob and Mary Schindler has died, slowly executed by court order. Even in her death, the parents and their other children remain the example of peaceful forgiving Christians. While many Teri supporters angrily lash out at Michael Schiavo, George Felos, the court and even elected officials, the family asks for peace. And now they are asking only for the body of their daughter, which is also being legally denied. What beautiful people.....

Or ---- is this 21st Century re-enactment of Uncle Tom's Cabin ? I know many people would be offended that I would make such a suggestion but the comparison is real. It has been a while since I've read the book so please forgive me if I am not entirely correct about the story.

Like the Schindler family, Uncle Tom and his fellow slaves were living a quiet peaceful life, until the tragic turn of events. Then Uncle Tom and other slaves were sold to the evil Simon Legree. Uncle Tom accepted his fate to the end, never fighting back. He met another slave, Cassy, whose two children had been sold. Rather than have another child to be born into slavery, she killed the next baby she had.

Then there was Eliza. She also had a child. Choosing to 'violate the law' rather than remain a slave, she took her child and fled north.

Terri Schindler Schiavo is not the only innocent person who is or has been legally executed in this country. She is just the one that has made the national and even international news. Most of these executions happen in quiet, much like the slave who killed her babies. No one to speak up for them.

There are others who 'violate the law' to save the innocent condemned to death. Sometimes, the victim is kidnapped and secreted to other states or even countries. A few families have done the extreme and killed or attempted to kill the person who was harming their family member. Surely any parent can understand this act of desperation, whether they condone it or not.

No pro-life person would condemn the Schindlers for using every legal means to save their daughter. Although poll questions show that the majority of Americans supported removing the feeding tube from Terri, how many would answer the same way if the question was re-phased, "If your own child was injured and brain-damaged like Terri Schindler Schiavo, able to breath on her own, and apparently move and look around to a limited extent, would you remove all food and water and allow you own child to die of dehydration?"

Uncle Tom's Cabin is only one of many comparisons for the tragedy of Terri's death. More people can see the re-emergence of the Nazi eugenics program, where a half-million handicapped people were killed before Hitler even started his 'final solution' of the Jews. But even later most of the Jews went peacefully to the slaughter.

Exodus, chapter 1, Pharaoh ordered the deaths of newborn Hebrew males. When midwives disobey the law, Pharoah ordered his own people to kill the male Hebrew babies. Only Moses was singled out as being saved by his mother. How many other parents peacefully obeyed the law? Today, in China, women are forced to get abortions. Some try to escape and save their babies, but most give in to the law which does not allow them to have a baby without prior permission.

And there are so many other real life examples of the law condemning an innocent person to death and Uncle Tom's Cabin is just one story that shows a few of the many reactions people have to such a horrendous situation..

Interesting that "Schiavo" in Italian means "slave."

I believe Dred Scott is a more apt comparison.

Terri Schindler Schiavo is not the only innocent person who is or has been legally executed in this country

I think this is the most important bit of knowledge that Terri's state sanctioned killing has brought to light to a very wide audience.

" And now they are asking only for the body of their daughter, which is also being legally denied. What beautiful people..... "

Scott Schiavo talks on the telephone, Thursday, March 31, 2005, at his home in Levittown Pa., follow the death of his sister-in-law. Terri Schiavo.

Terri Schiavo's ashes will be buried in an undisclosed location near Philadelphia so that Terri's immediate family doesn't attend and turn the burial into a media spectacle, a member of the Schiavo family said Thursday. ``If Mike knew they would come in peace, he would have no problem with it,'' Scott Schiavo, Michael Schiavo's brother, said during an interview at his home. Read the book first. Simon Legree comes at the end and none of the Slaves with Uncle Tom at the beginning of the story were with Tom at the end. The only one was the son of his owner in KY who was in college when the story began who spent the story looking for Tom to buy him back. There were many stops along the way for Tom on the way to his death. I really do not see the Terri connection unless you see her fight as a battle for the soul of evil men.

One of the things I have never understood is how "Uncle Tom" became a pejorative. Tom was a Christian who was obedient and patient except with Simon. To Simon he stood his ground and refused to renounce his faith. It was a battle of wills, good vs evil. Tom lost his life but Simon was defeated also. He found the one slave he could not break. Tom died in George's arms but he never renounced his faith.

Read the book first, it is a powerful book and should be read.

Michael Schiavo is like a ghoul trying to run off with a body. Even the evil people who caused the death of Jesus allowed the friends and relatives of Jesus to know where they laid his body, and they came to the tomb.

It is documented that Abraham Lincoln exclaimed upon meeting the author of Uncle Tom's Cabin, Harriet Beecher Stowe, "So you are the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war"!

Like Uncle Tom's Cabin did to slavery, the injustice done to Terri Schindler (schiavo) has shown a bright light upon the evil of our Culture of Death. Is another 'great war' upon us?

Not to mention that her maiden name was Schindler.

Uh, I'm pretty sure that most of us hear have read pretty much all there is to read about this, including what the judge admitted as evidence to base his decision.

Until two months ago, I wasn't even reading the Terri Schiavo threads. But once I chose to find out what all the fuss was about, I read everything I could.

I totally understand the outrage. And, most of the press has tried to bamboozle me into thinking that Terri was brain dead and on life support. So, I don't know what the heck you are talking about.

Thanks, I've haven't read it in 20+ years. I'll have to read it online this time. The book I had from my grandfather I lost in a house fire.

But like Tom, the Schindlers have not lost faith. I am simply saying that, like Tom, they didn't violate the law nor their peaceful stance. For better or worse. Some chose a different path. Is that accurate?

Yes I guess you could say that. In a loose sense yes they are people of faith, they kept it despite the horror.

Okay I'll bite. Was she on any life support other than a feeding tube? Could she not breath on her own? I have heard all the other stuff but they do not factor in my equation. If the feeding tube is your definition of life support you have lost me and will not regain me. I suspect you think I will be persuaded by some other fact, like Mike Shiavo never beat her, perhaps he didn't, I never knew one way or the other. I understand she was dependent on the feeding tube and ordinary nursing care only. Unless you can call into question that then you totally fail to see what people are angry about.

Uncle Tom's Cabin was a tool by Puritan anti-slavery types to condemn the south. From a literature point, it was considered a joke at the time it was written...but was printed in such massive bulk...that everyone and their brother from northern and western states had a copy to read. It was automatically perceived as absolute fact...even though the vast amount of details in the book...were glossy type propaganda to fill the public's vision of the south. Terri and her story might be a Uncle Tom's Cabin...a tool by someone...which I would hope would be a false belief. Certainly, it hasn't been a simple pure task to believe either side of the Terri sitatuation. Both sides have told some whoppers and been somewhat untruthful at times.
