Schiavo circus hurt the GOP [Anybody got another opinion?]
San Diego Union-Tribune ^ | April 1, 2005 | by Ruben Navarrette Jr.

San Diego -- NOW THAT Terri Schiavo has died, many of the questions the country has been wrestling with are moot.

It no longer matters which doctor had the right diagnosis, or whether Schiavo's husband or parents had her best interests at heart, or whether the federal government should have been involved, or whether this was a case that was best handled by doctors and family members as opposed to politicians and judges.

By giving your enemies enough rope to hang you with.

Jeb's enemies are tools of the culture of death. He loses nothing by offending them.

I think President Bush and Congress were right in trying to intervene on a helpless woman's behalf. It was obvious that Michael Schiavo, Judge Greer, and Mr. Felos had their own agendas, to kill her. May Terri rest in peace. Michael can't hurt her anymore.

If the GOP was hurt, it was because they backed down, not because they spoke out.

But my primary response to this headline is, "They wish."

The Schiavo murder is potentially devastating to the Democrats. They are the ones who need to worry, because every year they have more and more closely identified themselves with the culture of death.

By doing a 180 on the position that the feds should stay out of state affairs.

You think a policy theory somehow trumps a young, innocent woman's life? Only a tool of the culture of death would support that reading.

Can we presume from this statement that if your state orders your death as an innocent, you will urge restraint by the federales in their sworn duty to protect your right to life?

How can you be 'hurt' advocating for life?

"By giving your enemies enough rope to hang you with."

Jeb's enemies are tools of the culture of death. He loses nothing by offending them.

Nice rhetoric, but non-responsive. Republicans have given their enemies ammunition to frighten the swing vote with. Play smarter or the next 150 judges will be appointed by Hillary.

Only if the public percieves it. Cough.

Didn't hurt the party per se because many pubbies were on both sides of the fence. However, I'm personally and severely disappointed in Jeb Bush.

Policy theory? How about the Constitution this country is based on? The state was supposed to give the case due process, and it did. It did even according to the federal government after Congress essentially told Florida "Sorry kid, you can't take care of yourself so we're stepping in."

Are we a nation of laws and separate sovereign states or are we not? You support breaking that structure according to an issue you feel strongly about. That's what the liberals have been doing for years, and we have been criticizing them for it for years.

This issue has caused the most hyporisy I've ever seen on FR.

I don't see it that that the GOP was hurt. I think that the Democrats have the fight of their lives on their hands now, after another activist court fiasco.

This is a time of mourning! The bickering should come later...there will be a time to lash out on all who just stood by and murdered Terri. How quickly the OMwhores have forgotten the power of the people in a voting booth! Just watch the liberal rats and their hordes of PRESStitutes drop their nasty jaws to the floor come voting time!! BUT, for now, it's a time of mourning and prayer for the family who just lost a beloved daughter and sister. Prayers for them lifted up toward heaven! :(

Its not hypocrisy, its ignorance. They are acting on princple, I respect that, but they are paving the road with good intentions.

the GOP will be fine... people understand that it was the GOP that at least made an attempt to save a life... the left won't say anything about it because they can't answer the question, "What did you do to save her life?"

What a foolish statment. It is the US CONSTITUTION that requires due process. IT IS A FEDERAL ISSUE. Terri's life was suppose to be protected by the FEDERAL CONSTIUTION. That you and your friends in the pr-death movement were able to see that she wasn't given a review of her due process is no reason to be angry. I would think your side would be elated.

You are correct. Unforunately that's one taken straight from the liberal playbook.

All of you wishing evil on Jeb, George or any other Republican official in this matter because they didn't have a "spine", let me ask you a question: Were you at the hospice protesting? Did you try to get water to Terri? Did you risk your job, your career, and maybe your life, to try to kidnap Terri and spirit her away?

If you were President would you have risked impeachment to save Terr? Because sure as God made little green apples the Dems would have tried to Impeach President Bush if he had interfered any further and they may have succeeded. Jeb faced jail time and loss of his office if he interfered any further.

I didn't see any of you that are screaming about how gutless they (Jeb, George and assorted congress people)are risking your life, your career and jail time to help her.

Until you are ready to back up your talk with action then you are as gutless as those you critisize. If they are cowards what does that make you?

As to the question this post asks, are the republicans split over this issue, I would say real republicans aren't but the fair weather ones will probably drop out. Good riddance to you.

I agree. The case brought to light the fact that we can no longer take our lives for granted when in someone else's care.

We'll be wrestling with these issues for some time to come, but I don't see a long-term downside for the GOP. There's only so much the left can say, without becoming ghouls and advocating euthanasia outright, and trampling on the rights of the disabled.

It is the US CONSTITUTION that requires due process.

For criminal cases. This wansn't one.

. IT IS A FEDERAL ISSUE.

It was a state issue under state laws concerning incapacitated persons. It couldn't even be reviewed by the federal courts until Congress gave them a special one-time jurisdiction.

Terri's life was suppose to be protected by the FEDERAL CONSTIUTION.

Terri was supposed to be protected under state law. The legislators in florida refused to modify state law in order to save her.

That you and your friends in the pr-death movement were able to see that she wasn't given a review of her due process is no reason to be angry.

This case went all the way through the Florida court system several times. It was given a quite unprecedented level of review even before it hit the federal courts.

I would think your side would be elated.

My side was on keeping her from dehydrating. My side was also on not destroying our republic to do it.
