Minuteman Project causes concern in Mexico
NBC KVOA 4 ^ | March 30, 2005 | Lupita Murillo

Later this week, the spotlight will be on Southeastern Arizona. Starting Friday, the month-long Minuteman Project will have volunteers, some armed, watching and waiting for illegal border crossers.

It's gaining international attention. Tuesday, Mexican officials met with the Mayor of Douglas to discus how they will handle potential violence.

Angela Castillo Lopez and her 10-year-old granddaughter live in Agua Prieta Sonora. They cross daily into Douglas to visit family and to buy groceries.

But with word of the Minuteman Project, Lopez says she won't be crossing after April 1st. She feels its too dangerous.

That concerns Agua Prieta Mayor David Figueroa and Douglas Mayor Ray Borane. They met privately to discuss the situations.

Mayor Borane showed fugueroa a flyer distributed over the weekend by a group calling themselves National Alliance.

Borane says, "I think they are concerned, maybe a little bit more, because its going to be dealing with their compatriots."

That's why the Agua Prieta Mayor called a meeting with 50 other local and national officials.

It was one of those officials who bought another flyer to distribute to Mexican citizens. It warns people about crossing the desert in April.

The flyer states, "vigilantes" will be patrolling 24 hours and might be armed.

Mayor Figueroa says his plan is to be cautions and to maintain a low profile. The last thing he want is to provoke violence.

David Morales, a spokesman for Agua Prieta says, "We understand it can become a volitale situation and we don't want to contribute to that in any form."

The Mexican military is on stand-by. One unit has about a thousand soldiers. They're located just across the border.

They're united with the Mayor of Agua Prieta and they're saying they're hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst.

"I pray that God helps the minutemen down there retain clear heads and make good decisions..."

I, likewise, hope the Mexican military does not involve itself in issues on this side of the border, that care is taken on both's behalves not to escalate the issue into an armed confrontation/assault.

It may eventually have to come down to that tripwire event to get political lame-@$$e$ off their duffs and allow enforcement of our immigration code or Washington advise we give up altogether..

They're just going around the Minutemen.

Of course you are right.

One of the Minutemen's major points is that sufficient manpower will keep the illegals from crossing and this proves their point.

>>we've already got enough to contend with in 100+ other countries we are in, ya know?<<

That right there is the problem. If the President and Congess started taking care of America FIRST, we wouldn't have 90% of the problems that we do.

If the President had said, "Close all Points of Entry and enforce illegal immigration to make sure nobody can sneak in to America on 9/12/2001, it would have passed the House and Senate in a flash. Then the Minutemen Plan would NEVER have been necessary.

But no, instead he comes out with this No Child Illegal Shall Be Left Behind socialist garbage and we are feeding half of Mexico today.

Anchor babies are in full force today. Two out of three in the southern border states, thanks to his Open Borders plan.

I have a hard time believing that there is a terrorist threat when Homeland Security isn't screaming to close the borders.

Once a word is put into the media such as vigilante, as Bush called the defenders of America, it is there to stay. Learning from the liberals means to lie with a smile on your face. Bush has made criminals of men who should be honored for their patriotism - something that is dead in America and our government.

"Once a word is put into the media such as vigilante, as Bush called the defenders of America, it is there to stay."

Rush just sliced up that stigma, noting also the 'thanks by the border guards for witness assistance." He chuckled at the paradox.

You are right, though. Vigilante is a nasty thing to call them. What if gangs attack them and they defend themselves? Could lead to a paramilitary conflict. Something tells me that the Mexican gangs would get US Federal support to 'prevent escalation'.

FReegards....

Did any Mexican gangs threaten to attack them? Rush just read that the Mexican military is going on alert at the border. FReegards....

My hometown paper would also be for the Mexicans. So journalists are traitors, as the above poster said.

the problem with mexico is that it's a parasitic state dependent upon the united states.

if mexico were a normal, developing country, they'd be well...er...d-e-v-e-l-o-p-i-n-g.

by developing, we mean developing educational and infrastructure to compete within the world economy. take korea , for example. p*ss poor, but they worked themselves into a developed country. they now export cars.

does mexico export cars? only the ones the europeans and americans make there. do the mexicans know, after 20 years of making cars, HOW to make a car? nada.

why isn't mexico developing?

answer--a couple dozen billionaires and several thousands of manorial class white, europeans run the country. there's virtually no middle class.

this mexican elite is racist. they hate the mexican poor because they are either part indian or all indian.

it's this mexican white elite that yells "racism" at the united states while keeping their peasants down.

The Honduran(?) gang MS-13 did threaten them, although that was probably hot air. MS-13 members in the States include enforcement for the drug cartels in their resume.

JB told me a little while ago that a small gang of wannabes lined up while Jim Gilchrist was holding a press conference in Tombstone and started the gang-banger march on him...some had their hands stuck inside their shirts...then they realized that almost everyone around them was practicing Arizona's State Pastime (open carry) and the young men turned tail.

Hopefully, that will be indicative of events for the next month.

I'll try to keep all posted.

"The Mexican military is on stand-by. One unit has about a thousand soldiers. They're located just across the border."

Then why don't THEY keep their OWN people from coming into OUR country???? If they don't cross over, there is no problem!!!

They have a god given, contitutionally guaranteed right to be there if they want.

Really? Where is the supporting documentation? A search/find for Douglas turns up zilch in either document.

Tuesday, the Mexican officials met with the Mayor of Douglas to discuss how to handle any violence?

Where is Mayor Eastwood when you need him?

Solution: Mexican officials need to ARREST and JAIL their own illegal citizens first! DO YOUR JOBS OR WE'LL DO IT FOR YOU!

I agree with the sentiment. Be careful though. Very complex and dangerous.

Israel can surround herself with a wall but we can’t? It is a sad day when the citizens of this country have to do the work of government who is sworn to do; protect us as guaranteed by our Constitution. G.W. had better understand the political ramification if one of those Minute Men get harmed. There will be a move to impeach him from the Left. You watch and see!
