Later this week, the spotlight will be on Southeastern Arizona. Starting Friday, the month-long Minuteman Project will have volunteers, some armed, watching and waiting for illegal border crossers.
It's gaining international attention. Tuesday, Mexican officials met with the Mayor of Douglas to discus how they will handle potential violence.
Angela Castillo Lopez and her 10-year-old granddaughter live in Agua Prieta Sonora. They cross daily into Douglas to visit family and to buy groceries.
But with word of the Minuteman Project, Lopez says she won't be crossing after April 1st. She feels its too dangerous.
That concerns Agua Prieta Mayor David Figueroa and Douglas Mayor Ray Borane. They met privately to discuss the situations.
Mayor Borane showed fugueroa a flyer distributed over the weekend by a group calling themselves National Alliance.
Borane says, "I think they are concerned, maybe a little bit more, because its going to be dealing with their compatriots."
That's why the Agua Prieta Mayor called a meeting with 50 other local and national officials.
It was one of those officials who bought another flyer to distribute to Mexican citizens. It warns people about crossing the desert in April.
The flyer states, "vigilantes" will be patrolling 24 hours and might be armed.
Mayor Figueroa says his plan is to be cautions and to maintain a low profile. The last thing he want is to provoke violence.
David Morales, a spokesman for Agua Prieta says, "We understand it can become a volitale situation and we don't want to contribute to that in any form."
The Mexican military is on stand-by. One unit has about a thousand soldiers. They're located just across the border.
They're united with the Mayor of Agua Prieta and they're saying they're hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst.
You might be right.
Syria steped in it by assassinating the former Lebanese leader and inflaming the populace.
Any act of force by the Mexican army would surely galvanize public sentiment against the Bush open border policies.
Personally, I have no problem with a family crossing to shop in Douglas...if that is their purpose, they are already considered legal.
It's the folks who cross without valid documention and who have no intention of returning home with whom I have problems.
Isn't it interesting that Lupita used something we accept as an example to make it look like we are racist and anti-immigrant instead of pro-law enforcement!?
Perfect! You fell right into Lupita's trap. What she describes is a perfectly legal activity on the part of both Mexican and American citizens - a short trip across the border to shop or visit.
They don't need green cards, they have a temporary visit pass that gets them waved through the Port of Entry in both directions.
It's the gang bangers and other illegals that cross through 'The Jungle' 300 yards west of the POE that we're trying to stop.
LOL! Where's the picture of the truck load of Illegals?
I have written to my senators with only one response and as he is carrying the water for Bush on the subject I didn't get much of a positive response. When the RNC calls I tell them to call Pres. Fox and Bush's illegal immigrant buddies for the money as I will not longer contribute.
that's why, if we need cheap labor, we should get it from somewhere else
Brilliant! And it will work like a charm thanks to our complicite MSM shilling the administration line.
We need the new media to get the real stories out quickly as they happen
The withholding of donations should turn into a national project....like the minutemen. The RNC would straighten out the Republicans on the wrong side of the issue in a heartbeat if they got hit in the pocketbooks.
Sad that the only thing our politicians understand is the $ sign.
Who cares. The minutemen are right, consequences be damned. Sometimes you gotta say what the hell and do what is right.
They're just going around the Minutemen. The drug and human smugglers know where the Minutemen are and are not going near them because there are a lot of people and a lot of cameras in that area. Taking their chances with the Border Patrol is a safer bet for them.
Thank you!
Happy, smiling, vaving criminals.
that is what government inaction has led to - if things get tense we either have to fight them or cede Denver, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Las Vegas to the Mexican hordes a la française
You have a point as long as it's not from France, whence Napoleonic Law came and still lives. That's why France seems so disagreeable to the US.
The same argument was made for Terri...and look what happened to her.
Many citizens are deeply allegiant, are armed too, and have no quams taking them up to confront those who'll threaten life and liberty of those who are called fellow Americans.....;-)
"Isn't it interesting that Lupita used something we accept as an example to make it look like we are racist and anti-immigrant instead of pro-law enforcement!?"
Interesting yes, surprising no. Lupita is a liberal hispanic activist who supports racist organizations like LaMecha and LaRaza. I can only wait to see what our local CBS station (KOLD 13) puts on air - they are by far the most racist, left leaning station in the Tucson Market.
Does the Mayor of Douglas understand the phrase, "aiding and abetting the enemy"?
