Diet panel OK's bill to rename April 29 'Showa Day'

(Kyodo) _ A House of Representatives committee on Friday approved a bill to rename April 29, which is now Greenery Day, as Showa Day to mark the birthday of Emperor Hirohito.

A majority of the lower house Cabinet Committee approved the measure as lawmakers of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and its coalition partner New Komeito party, and the opposition Democratic Party of Japan voted for it.

On Wednesday, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroyuki Hosoda acknowledged that people with memories of World War II could have objections to the new name as it might prompt them to recall their wartime suffering, but said the decision rests with parliament.

The national holiday on April 29, was named Greenery Day in 1989 after the emperor's death because he had a keen interest in biology and botanical studies. Before being renamed Greenery Day, the national day holiday was known as the Emperor's Birthday.

Greenery day will now be celebrated on May 4. A revised law on national holidays will pass in the current parliamentary session, supporters of the measure said.

The Showa era covers the reign of Emperor Hirohito from Dec. 25, 1926 to his death on Jan. 7, 1989. The current era, under the reign of his son, Emperor Akihito, is called Heisei.

What's it with keeping dead emperor's birthday as a national holiday? Is he some sort of 'eternal emperor'?

Not an admirer of the various things that Emperor Showa (Hirohito) ordered or allowed to happen in his region, but I always through "Midori no hi", (Greenery Day), sounded rather lame. I'd be for a "Showa no ni" if it does any good. As it is, it will probably inspire even more extreme right wing Imperialist sound trucks to make the rounds, blasting their martial music and vitriolic speeches all around Tokyo, threatingly looking at anyone who gaves them a stare back or looks even remotely 'foreign'.

Okay. Maybe they'll find it in their hearts to proclaim a Shoei-Showa Day. It will, of course, be another day off for the Japanese.

Isn't it hard for a hundred and thirty-five pound 5'-5 Jap to look "threateningly" at just about anyone?

Their national pride is founded on a profound national ignorance of what really happened during WWII.

I have actually seen Emperor Hirohito on four occasions in Tokyo (albeit from a distance a little bit).

On all four, it all seemed like he was barely alive. I personally do not think he passed away the day they said he did, but rather, kept on ice for a few days until Japan's national new years string of holidays were completed.

I reported at the Imperial Palace (near the edge of one of the moats) the morning he died--the day they said he died, I guess. The 'tenno heika, banzai!'s shouted from the older crowd (many whom are now probably dead themselves) was eery and blood curdling.

Interest take you have on Emperor Hirohito.

What's your thought about average Japanese, i.e. Japanese today, post-war Japanese, children, etc?

Maybe you meant the crazy, extreme right/imperialist Japanese in their sound trucks driving around Tokyo--rather than Emperor Showa.

Don't be too sure, some of those idiots and psychos have pistols (albeit illegal) funneled to them by the yakuza. Take away their pistols and they could be made minced meat of very easily.

It's a good idea. The Showa period was one of the longest in Japanese record and saw one of the largest changes in Japanese culture and politics. Only the Meiji and Muromachi periods are anywhere close.

I just hope it brings back "8ji da yo! Zenin shugo!", "Taiyo ni hoero", "Ashita no Jo", "11PM", and all the "porori tv."
Perhaps they could show all of the great Japanese TV shows that aired during Showa, and some Misora Hibari performances or something.

The only thing that comes close to the old soft-porn Showa TV is "Yoru no Bijo" with Okamoto Natsuki. Sugita Kaoru used to host the show and it was funny as hell.

It's only on in Kansai though.
