God I love Hemingway.
When he was good, he was very good. But when he was faking it, the stuff reads like a comic book.
I like his stuff so much I'm rationing it. Apparently, I haven't run into the comic book material yet.
Because in any socialist entity, being inside the controlling infrastructure is better than being stuck outside. They want control out of the hands of "The People" unless they are the sum of "the people".
The bad stuff is scattered throughout. The Nick Adams Stories are probably some of the best stuff.
Thats good news, because I haven't read those yet. I've been slowly working my way through a short story collection, alternating with a Faulkner collection as night reading.
Faulkner is good as well. You might want to try Light in August or the triology (Hamlet, Town, Mansion).
Lewis, Peter B.

Peter Benjamin Lewis.
He likes to brag that in 1974 -- during the Vietnam War - he bought Andy Warhol pictures of Mao Tse-tung and hung them in Progressive's offices. His employees demanded that the pictures of the old monster be taken down. Lewis refused. Thirty years later, the Mao pictures have some value. One hangs in the Progressive boardroom where, maybe, it motivates Lewis' business ethics.
Lewis has a reported wealth estimated at $3 billion. Progressive Corporation, the fourth-largest auto insurer in North America, employs about 14,000 people with yearly revenues of $8 billion. It is based in Mayfield Village, Ohio. The mogul describes himself as "half screwball, half businessman." His former wife, Toby Devan Lewis, with whom Lewis remains friends, is curator of Progressive's art collection.
In 2000, while visiting his daughter on her sheep ranch in New Zealand, Lewis was caught by customs officials with marijuana in his brief case. He was arrested, his yacht searched and his stash discovered. Charged, he admitted the offense to the police, made it clear that he did not want a lawyer and, the next day, pleaded guilty to charges of importing the plant and resin. After spending the night in jail, Lewis, now with a lawyer and having made a massive donation to a local drug-treatment center, was released without a conviction and the case sealed.
Lewis is, by repute, a generous philanthropist. Foundation sources say he gives to art galleries, museums and colleges with abandon, provided that his wishes are carried out promptly.

The quote -- used in the movie Magnolia -- "We are not done with the past, because the past is not done with us," (paraphrased) is generally attributed to Faulkner.
His nobel prize speech (available free in either recorded version or printed online) is one of the great "writer speeches" of the 20th centur.
This has been my first exposure to Faulkner, and I feel forced to admit that I really don't like what I've seen all that much. It's not bad, it's just not THAT good. JMHO. I'll definitely pursue more of his material though, to try to get an idea of why he's considered so important.
As I Lay Dying is a good a place as any to start. A very fast read.
His short stories were written for money, the books are much different.
Re: Geico
Way back the NRA criticized the company for anti-selfdefense statements in a policy statement, so I have always been against them. They have since refuted their statements, but is still classified as a "you decide" from the 2nd Amendment Sisters. I checked out the NRA "black list" and couldn't find the company. I couldn't find any NRA response. I did find that as an NRA member you get a deal on AIG auto insurance So I would advocate this over Geico anyway.
Perhaps that's my issue. I'll pick that one up the next time I have an evening at B&N.
He wants to legalize pot.
He has made a lot of money.
Therefore he has a point?
The point is on the top of his head.
The next time he gets caught with pot they should throw his ass in jail
where he belongs, and keep him there.
Oh, yeah...I forgot. Everybody makes money the exact same way...
"I never understood the reasons why these ultra rich are commie supporters.. they want to be taxed ?"
No, they want to enslave mankind so that they can have everything they want without cost to themselves. They are using their dollars in an attempt to enact such enslavement. They want to remove any resistance, especially Christian resistence...
"Lewis was arrested (in New Zealand) and admitted to three charges of importing drugs after customs officers found two ounces of hashish and 1.7 ounces of marijuana in his luggage. New Zealand Judge David Harvey dropped the charges and invited Lewis to watch the challenger rounds for the America's Cup yacht race while in New Zealand and to "enjoy the fresh air."
Is is possible that the vast amount of funds available for the destruction of America as we know it is coming from the drug trade? Also, that the mind and the soul of this man has been shriveled by the use of hashish and pot?
Auto insurance and communism come together in America???...just lovely...
