KINGSPORT - A Fall Branch man broke into a Kingsport woman's home and took her purse and a handgun early Tuesday morning - but not before she got off two rounds in his direction.
The man's night didn't get any better. He was arrested about 20 minutes later for DUI by a county officer.
Clara Groseclose, 83, had just gone upstairs at her home around 3 a.m. when she heard a noise downstairs in the room she had just left, Kingsport Police Detective Cpl. David Quillen said.
"She went to investigate and encountered a man inside the house near a broken window. He demanded money and they struggled," Quillen said.
Groseclose had retrieved a pistol before checking out the noise in her house and during the struggle with the man was able to fire two rounds at the man, later identified as Mark Foulk, 44, of 1160 Mill Creek Road, Fall Branch.
Foulk took the gun away from Groseclose and got her purse before fleeing the house.
As he drove away from the area, Sullivan County Sheriff's Deputy Micah Johnston saw the vehicle and pulled Foulk over.
He arrested Foulk for DUI, speeding and violation of implied consent.
While taking Foulk to the county jail, Johnston heard dispatchers transmit information about the robbery.
"Officer Johnston called KPD and advised them he may have the suspect," SCSO Lt. Lisa Christian said.
While searching the suspect, Johnston had noticed that Foulk had glass in his pockets, and he had injuries that were consistent with what the robbery suspect might have, according to Quillen.
"He had cuts on his hands and an abrasion on his face that could have come from a muzzle flash from a gun being fired," Quillen said.
Johnston had also found a handgun and woman's purse in Foulk's vehicle. Those items were turned over to KPD for the robbery investigation.
Groseclose has already identified the gun as hers, police said.
Groseclose received a minor cut to her knee during the struggle with Foulk and was checked at a local hospital just to be sure she did not suffer any other injuries.
In addition to the traffic charges, Foulk is charged in Kingsport with robbery and aggravated burglary. He'll be arraigned on the charges in Kingsport General Sessions Court Wednesday.
But, might I be so bold as to suggest a little time on the range? That way you might have removed that scumbag from the gene pool.
Go, granny, go.
Dude!!! You got your a$$ kicked by an old lady!!!
I bet he crapped his pants ping.
Go Granny!
Agree. It could have turned out real bad - a drunken burglar with a pistol.
But, I bet he caught royal hell from the inmates when they got him in the jug.
'Grandma--what a large caliber pistol you've got!'
'The better to blow your a** away with, junior.'
This is sick. That old lady should have her guns taken away. We all know how evil guns are...
</idiocy>

But - I got me a nice little Colt six-shooter - and I was taught that if you have to shoot - shoot to kill, or prepare to be killed. She was d*mn lucky...
But just D*mn, spunky. Yeah, granny
I think that by driving a car on public roads, you have given your implied consent to submit to sobriety tests if you are suspected of being impaired.
Thanks, both of you, for the explanations. I simply didn't recognize the terminology.
GREAT Tag line!!
Granny Ping!
Don't you know he is gonna hear about this when he gets to jail.
"Hey pretty boy. Come wash my socks or I'll tell my grandmother to kick yer ass".
