Joan Kennedy Hospitalized in Mass.

BOSTON - Joan Kennedy, the former wife of Massachusetts Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), is in the hospital recuperating from a concussion and a broken shoulder after a passer-by found her lying in a street, according to her son.

Kennedy, 68, was taken to Tufts New England Medical Center about 3 a.m. Tuesday, said Rep. Patrick Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), D-R.I.

"We're indebted to some anonymous pedestrian who found her and picked her up and got her help," Patrick Kennedy told the Boston Herald for its Wednesday editions.

Details of exactly what happened and how she ended up in the street were unclear. There was no police report on the incident. Joan Kennedy, who divides her time between Cape Cod and a Boston condominium, has struggled with alcoholism.

That's very sad. Living with Ted Kennedy could drive anyone to drink.

Gut feeling: Howie Carr, local talk show host, will be talking about this subject later today.

Better a street than an Oldsmobile.

"Which of the twelve steps is that one?"

It is strong evidence, for the First Step:

"Admitted we were powerless over alcohol - that our lives had become unmanageable."

For people of great means, the unmanageable part is always subject to being propped up by money, and enabling people close to them.

The only treatment is complete abstinence. Twelve step programs do work.

It is hard for famous people to find anonymity.

But many have recovered long term, such as Anthony Hopkins, Eric Clapton, Carol Burnett, Alice Cooper, Bonnie Raitt, supposedly Elton John, to name some well known people.

There is a concert in LA each summer, and top performers show up unannounced (anonymity).

I was thinking the exact same thing. They sure like their booze in that family.

Well, at least she didn't drown. Not stuck in a car under water. [sorry]

She's not on life support or on a feeding tube is she? The spectacle of having the Kennedys, John Kerry, and the Archbishop of Boston KILLING another Catholic woman this soon after Easter would be a BIT MUCH.

It might keep Jesse Jackson busy though.
