TRANSCRIPT Updated: 4:04 p.m. ET March 29, 2005 The overwhelming majority in the medical community say Terri Schiavo has close to no brain activity and has no chance of regaining awareness. Dr. Ronald Cranford, who actually examined Terri Schiavo in 2002 and testified to her condition, joined "The Abrams Report" on Monday. Cranford is the assistant chief of neurology at the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis as well as a faculty member at the University of Minnesota's Center for Bioethics. Below is the transcript of their conversation.
DAN ABRAMS, HOST: You're one of the few people who has actually examined Terri Schiavo and you're hearing all of these people who are coming on from the sidelines saying, "She's has been misdiagnosed," et cetera. How confident are you in your diagnosis and why?
DR. RONALD CRANFORD, UNIV. OF MN NEUROLOGIST: I'm extremely confident. I think at the time of the trial in 2002 there had been eight neurologists who examined her. And of those eight neurologists total, seven of them said beyond any doubt whatsoever Terri is in a vegetative state. Her CT scan shows severe atrophy or shrinkage of the brain. Her EEG is flat and there's absolutely no doubt that she's been in a permanent vegetative state ever since 1990. There's no doubt whatsoever, Dan.

Yes, possible future benefits. I hope it works for people in the future.
It is a shame that there isn't any real help now.
Thanks for noticing. :-)
I didn't chose the scans avile. I only posted the ones in the article for the convenience of those who won't go to the link.
Terri's scan alone shows the significant atrophy of her brain.
You are wrong. I am very serious about this situation.
Why do you say I am jerking people's chains? Because I won't give my own opinion?
Besides, you have control of your chains. Don't let anyone jerk them. Okay?
Another excellent post raygun.
Where does this come from? Do you have a link to a (reliable) source?
I wonder, if Terri has been 'dead for fifteen years', as Dr Deathford proclaimed, how come her 2002 CT showed some improvement in tissue from the earlier one? [HINT: the distance from brain stem when the image is made has a lot to do with how much cerebral cortex shows up on the scan.] Cranford (Dr. Deathford) is a paid assistant in the euthanasia movement; his bias, far from being ignored by Greer, etal, is a reason to favor his diagnosuis over ANY OTHERS ... if you're in the Felos 'starve 'um for the advancement of civilization' camp.
Sorry, texasflower. I meant to post to the original article as a general comment on the whole sorry mess, not to you.
You got it! I won't let anybody force it out of me. It's our secret.
Tammy
You and the rest of your euthanasia cheerleaders can just do us all a favor and save Social Security at the same time - just off yourselves now.
Okay. No problem. :-)
But Greer didn't see fit to have it performed, and IMO did not want to further muddy the waters with findings he did not expect.
PET scan technology would be of more use than a simple CT.
3) PET Scanning (Positron Emission Tomography)
The PET scan uses a small amount of a radioactive tracer put into the patient through a intravenous injection. After a period of time the tracer is absorbed into the tissue and this absorption is measured by the scanner. A PET scan usually takes between one to two hours to perform and requires the patient to lie completely still.
"PET scanning is an excellent tool for analyzing brain injuries because it shows where the brain is active. While other tests, like the CT scan, show what brain structures look like, the PET scan shows how the brain is actually functioning. For example, the PET scan show above is of an Alzheimer's brain, which is why large areas are black (which shows inactivity). "
Until the decision to starve her to death, she was not in danger of death, just of living too long to suit her husband. If her husband isn't willing to shoulder the burden, he could have passed it off to her parents and siblings who were more than willing.
This reminds me of the book "Johnny got his Gun", by Dalton Trumbo. The book is about a soldier in WWI who get all of his limbs blown off, goes deaf, loses his sight, and loses his speech, from a bomb. In the story, the soldier becomes concious again and realizes that he is just a "piece of meat that keeps on living." Years pass, and eventually he is able to communicate with his nurse by morse code. She tells the military about him, and they communicate. He tells them what its like to be a vegtable, and he asks them to kill him. When he does not get his wish granted, he realizes life for him will be a living hell for the rest of his existance. I think when you're nothing but a brainless bag of skin, you have the right to die.
Ummm.....from the link to the entire interview that this post was based on (not just the excerpted part provided).
Did you not read it?
BTW, no comment on Cranford's denigration of Cheshire as a 'christian fundamentalist'?
The assertion that Terri Schaivo was anorexic is denied by her siblings and parents, and as far as I know is not supported by contemporaneous medical records.
I understand that the sole basis for this widespread belief is Michael Schaivo's own assertions.
I'd be very interested to know if you have evidence to the contrary.
That would not be the Schindlers. It was about Michael.
>> What estate would that be?
Terri's life has value for its story. This may be a large estate in terms of book or movie rights and the estate has considerable power over the intellectual property and the disposition of those rights.
Whether this affects Michael's thinking remains to be seen. He famously loves money, of course, but I'm not turning this into a prediction. We'll just watch and see.
You said, several times, in these words or similarly, "Look at the facts. It's clear."
I look at that CT and don't see any facts. It isn't clear at all. It needs expert interpretation. You say you can't do that and heaven knows, I can't. I suggested consulting a doctor who can, and whose own reading of Terri's CT was that it was a good deal better than the doomsayers out there would like us to believe.
Supposing that the CT does show atrophy, it suggests a charge to be laid against Michael for denying Terri any kind of therapy all these years. Of course her condition will worsen if she's kept locked up in a little room and not even allowed to sit in the sun. That was cruel.
Honestly if you are so hardheaded or dense as to not see that scan shows severe atrophy then you are beyond any ability to reason.
