First Lady Laura Bush Says Government Right to Intervene in Case of Brain-Damaged Florida Woman
The Associated Press ^ | Mar. 29, 2005 | DEB RIECHMANN

Mar. 29, 2005 - First lady Laura Bush said Tuesday the government was right to have intervened in the case of Terri Schiavo, a severely brain-damaged Florida woman whose case has stirred national debate about life and death issues.

"I just feel like the federal government has to be involved," Mrs. Bush said. "It is a life issue that really does require government to be involved."

Mrs. Bush commented on the Schiavo case aboard a plane bound for Afghanistan, where she was to promote education and women's rights.

Schiavo's husband, Michael, has waged a long court battle with his parents-in-law, contending his 41-year-old wife, who has been in a persistent vegetative state since 1990, would not want to live that way. Schiavo's parents, on the other hand, have been pleading with the U.S. Congress, Florida lawmakers, federal judges and in courts in Florida to have their daughter's feeding tube reinserted.

"I am not surprised over the debate," Mrs. Bush said. "I think it's an issue that, you know, everyone is concerned about and interested in.

"I'm sorry for the family that it has to be so public. This is such a very, very difficult time for them and for everyone who watches Terri."

Mrs. Bush said she has been encouraged to hear that the case has prompted more people to inquire about living wills.

"I think that is really good," she said. "The president and I have living wills and, of course, our parents do. They wanted us always to be aware of it. I think that it is important for families to have opportunities to talk about these issues."

What I remember was agents were send but not to grap Terri, but to be in standby mode, in case something happened. (What that something was I don't know) but the local cops didn't said anything about it. For sure they did not said they would resist any attempt to take Terry, anyway they were recalled. Why is unknown.

O'Reily might have something up on this site about it.

No,what I'm saying is that unlike you, I know that we don't live in a dictatorship, nor do we have a monarchy where the king can do whatever he pleases. And it is long past time that you actually learned what is and what is not possible and blaming people for not doing what they are unable to do by law.

Does she actually talk to Jeb or her husband directly on this? What's the problem?

It would seem ridiculous in the extreme that this women should die with Laura Bush standing around saying, "Well, the government should have intervened." It will be too late.

So, logically, you support the starvation of Terri Schiavo, because that is what the law has required?

Both the president of the United States and the Governor of Florida are empowered by the Constitution with the legitimate authority to defend the constitutional right to life ( to not be murdered by other citizens) - by "enemies foreign or domestic." What we actually have is a tyranny of a secular humanist judiciary controlled and manipulated by amoral barbarians. The Governor and the President not only have the right but THE DUTY to defend citizens from these kinds of attacks.

Do you even have a tiny glimmer of an idea WHAT the parameters of the president's job description is? How about that of any governor?

Spouting off like a LIBERAL or a child doesn't help anyone or anything. And holding people "responsible" for things that they can NOT do,is beyond silly.

President Bush is forbidden by law, to run for president again.

Even without this Terri mess, Jeb was NOT ever going to run for president in '08 and IF he was, there is less than NO way that he would have been the GOP candidate. And he is also forbidden,by law, to run for Governor of Florida, when his present term expires.

So, no matter WHAT you and others decide about your "feelings" about these men, they hardly matter one whit, politically/election speaking. But,if on the basis of the Terri case, you and others decide to vote fringe party in the future, you might just as well go buy a straight razor and slice off your noses.

Everyone should have a living will. And yes, that came into being because situations have always been there, where people have doctors and/or family members did things they shouldn't.

It is better to set goals and look to winning the war.

No,logically I want the hysteria to stop and for people to get a grip. We may have lost this battle, but we can win the war. But people need to finally realize that real life is often nasty and horrible and that their wishes can't all be instantaneously fulfilled; or fulfilled at all.

I have a living will. It's tattooed on the dog. As I go through life acquiring more "stuff" I plan to acquire larger dogs to accomodate the document's increasing complexity. Cats are for the codicils.

That is very immature, he has both state and federal courts having ruled on this and it was very much out of his hands.

You can't have a clash of officers getting people perhaps killed over this.

But keep your passion and continue to get Congress and the Senate to restrict Courts more so by law in the future.

... that there wasn't a damned thing that could be LEGALLY, that hasn't already been done, by the president and the governor.

Federal Courts agree to hear appeal!!
