MILDENHALL, England (AP) - First lady Laura Bush said Tuesday the government was right to have intervened in the case of Terri Schiavo, a severely brain-damaged Florida woman whose case has stirred national debate about life and death issues. "I just feel like the federal government has to be involved," Mrs. Bush said. "It is a life issue that really does require government to be involved."
Mrs. Bush commented on the Schiavo case aboard a plane bound for Afghanistan, where she was to promote education and women's rights.
Schiavo's husband, Michael, has waged a long court battle with his parents-in-law, contending his 41-year-old wife, who has been in a persistent vegetative state since 1990, would not want to live that way.
Schiavo's parents, on the other hand, have been pleading with the U.S. Congress, Florida lawmakers, federal judges and in courts in Florida to have their daughter's feeding tube reinserted.
"I am not surprised over the debate," Mrs. Bush said. "I think it's an issue that, you know, everyone is concerned about and interested in.
"I'm sorry for the family that it has to be so public. This is such a very, very difficult time for them and for everyone who watches Terri."
Mrs. Bush said she has been encouraged to hear that the case has prompted more people to inquire about living wills.
"I think that is really good," she said. "The president and I have living wills and, of course, our parents do. They wanted us always to be aware of it. I think that it is important for families to have opportunities to talk about these issues."
She oughta get her husband to use the "stroke of the pen, law of the land" method, for something worthwhile.
Involved to eventually do what? Say it can't do anything?
How dare the representatives of the people of America get involved! What does she think this is? A Republic? How dare her sink so low!
Denote sarcasm. HA!
RIGHT NOW IS THE BATTLE FOR TERRI! AND ARE ONLY ENEMY IS TIME!
In these 12 days, God has gotten into the soul and conscience of these politicians. A bi-partisan MERCY COALITION is on the brink of forming,- DONT PUT DOWN TERRI, by not putting down your anger, hatred, acrimony, prejudices and desire for vengeance against those who have placed her in this situation- there will be plenty of time for that.
HOWEVER this is the time for HEALING. This is the time for bipartisan mercy, compassion, reconciliation, a brotherhood against inhumane torture. This is the time to save Terri!
DO YOU WANT TO SAVE TERRI? - Then, welcome Reverend Jackson and our other rivals that will follow him, because ONLY with their help, can the Fla legislature get the cover it needs to pass the needed legislation to save Terri.
Stop bashing, stop analyzing, stop blaming. SAVE TERRI! Open your hearts, and reach out to dems, pastors, ministers. rabbis - anyone person of faith and conscience willing to give her food and drink.
AGAIN, TIME IS THE ENEMY. As I indicated in a prior thread (Stop Bashing the Bushs), Jackson represents the first of our Mercy Coalition, AND , if we build it, others will surely come .
HANG ON TERRI, HELP IS COMING. And any one on this board who doesnt see the compassion in this bipartisan Mercy Coalition, has a mind set that isnt worth responding to. Time is our enemy, time is Terris enemy. We have none to waste on those who would obstinately place principle and ideology about saving Terris life.
FREEPERS RISE TO THE BATTLE- PASS THE WORD!
NEVER GIVE UP! NEVER GIVE UP! NEVER! NEVER! NEVER! Churchill
That sounds SO dirty.
Good for Laura Bush, she get's it.
turn your plane around and come back , Laura. Stop off in Florida and go visit Terri. She is a woman that is being starved and abused as the Afghan women. Then phone your husband and tell him to take his pen and write a note giving her freedom here in the USA.
Welcome to FR. Look, Redwm has already stated that s/he doesn't consider Ms. Shiavo "worthwhile." You're not going to change his/her mind. Stop yelling.
NEVER GIVE UP! NEVER GIVE UP! NEVER! NEVER! NEVER!
Churchill
bears repeating!!!!!!!!!
Because when able and well a person can hardly imagine that he or she would want to continue living in a state of agony or non-responsiveness, or inability to control any muscles. Or G-d forbid, lessened intellectual function.
Yet once that happens ... a person's mind changes. You find life -- even in pain, without muscle control -- as a mere observer of one's own thoughts, all senses dead or impaired -- still incredibly precious. Incredibly valuable, welcome and desired. Why is that? Perhaps to have that one purposeful thought or re-thought that makes a life on balance a eternal treasury -- for just the hope of that.
It happened to me -- my mindset changed. I was the same as many with regard to my wishes if ever greviously impaired -- yet once in that state (and thankfully for not too long either) I discovered it was stil a great treasure to live, even in pain, unable to control my muscles, to communicate.
Living wills -- written in that natural human emotion of fear of the unknown are like a death sentence your once-bold and proud, yet ignorant self writes upon your own self later. They are not a good thing and they are over- promoted in the winds of the hour.
I totally agree with you. I would have loved to have seen the Pres, Laura, or Jeb go and visit Terri at the hospice. That would have spoken volumes...even if they couldn't have gotten into see her.
Can anyone tell me if this will do any good? Complaint has been filed with the US Dept of Justice on Terri's behalf, and a stay of execution ordered (if I've read this correctly): http://www.theempirejournal.com/329052_federal_complaint_filed_w.htm
"ordered" should be "requested". My apologies for the error.
What intervene??? Did I miss something?
Welcome to the board and I agree.
It's about Terri.
The Republicans saving a few recalitrants in the Florida State Senate and Shays have done their best. Including Prez, Delay, Frist... Dems like Conrad have helped. Half of the Dems in the House were in support. Rush, Sean, Laura, Mark, etc. have been on this. If Jesse can convince some people to vote for Terri I will him do so. Santorum is coming down so I assume he and Jeb will be spending the next 24 hours working on those Reps.
I honestly do not know if they'll be successful, if it'll be too late, or even if she could survive in health after 12-13 absent food and water but if this were to all come to pass it would be a miracle deserving of praise to God.
We won't waste our time then, will we. We'll save Terri without him. Look's like now we're just 1 vote shy, and we'll have it by tomorrow. .
God Bless
Pollywog,
Then do it at every opportunity. You never know, your input just might change a mind that will help save Terri.
God works in mysterious ways.
God Bless
NEVER GIVE UP! NEVER GIVE UP! NEVER! NEVER! NEVER!
