Jackson: More Senators Back Bid to Save Terri
NewsMax ^ | Wednesday, March 30, 2005 | NewsMax.com Wires

Rev. Jesse Jackson said Tuesday afternoon that he has persuaded two Florida state senators to change their votes on a bill to save Terri Schiavo, leaving the measure just one vote shy of the majority necessary for passage.

"Two of them have committed to meeting with Gov. Jeb Bush. They say that they're flexible if they can find acceptable emergency language," Jackson told ABC Radio host Sean Hannity.

Targeting members of the state senate's black caucus in a bid to save Schiavo, Jackson explained: "While we didn't have the specific language today, if I could just get them to shift their will to do whatever [we can] within the law to help her live, that would be a victory."

"They've made that commitment," the civil rights leader added. "I hope it turns into something concrete, signed by morningtime."

Asked if he thought he'd convert the additional vote that would guarantee passage, Jackson said: "If we get two - with the help of Gov. Jeb Bush, we can get three. . . If I was able to persuade two - if he could persuade one, we can change that vote."

The top Democrat said he had contacted the governor's office and was awaiting a return call, saying, "I hope that he will call me and I hope to share with him my position."

Jackson said he would return to Florida tomorrow if he determines it is "the best, most effective way" to save Schiavo.

"I will fly to Tallahassee or Washington or anyplace," he said.

Really?

Really!

Obviously you've never witnessed anyone dying, she's not "fighting" anything.

I had my mother waste away from cancer and die in my arms. That makes two stupid statements from you on one thread. Quit while you're ahead. Go somewhere where others share your apparent eagerness for Terri's death.

Fact is, Jesse is going against much of his party to do this. Not to mention ignoring the sacred "polls" that intimidated our side.

There's not much political gain in doing that.

And I am just glad to see the hope in the eyes of the Schindlers as he arrived. Gotta admit, it has energized the situation.

It would be powerful and very healing for America for them to become instrumental in saving Terri. There are many socially conservative African-Americans who are surely repulsed by the killing of this innocent woman. If through JJ's involvement, their voices are also heard, it's a big step forward for America.

Great scenario!

Too little, too late. He's had literally months to get involved.

I called JAckson's office to thank him -- (while saying I'm not a supporter!)

RainbowPush: ph: 773-373-3366

info@rainbowpush.org I DON'T recommend giving Jesse's organization a DIME, not a RED CENT. But I DO think that he should hear thanks from people who -- while disagreeing with him on everything else (as I do) -- are glad that SOMEBODY has gone down to Florida to talk sense. How ironic that it took an arch-liberal to COUNTER THE PRO-DEATH PROPAGANDA OF THE MSM! Jesse called the starvation of Terri "immoral" and "unjust": you can't get more blunt - and accurate - than that, and the AP HAD TO REPORT HIS WORDS!! (They must have gagged.) So I called to say, "thank you" and "well done" - even though I told them I'm a conservative and not fan of Jesse Jackson!

I don't care who helps her. Rick Santorum is flying in tonight. Whatever it takes!

With both Santorum and Jackson there lobbying the legislators, I'd say they have both ends of the political spectrum covered. If they pull this off, it's going to be a major stunner.

Jesse used to be pro-life before he ran for president.

Right. On the bright side, it also has the liberal media flummoxed. They have tried every angle to paint this cause as the right-wing doing something political.

Can't do that anymore.

You are right about trying to lose the pessimism. If anything is to be accomplished here, bipartisan effort has to be made. It is possible for someone to be a complete jerk and yet not condone murder. While rifts can be wide, not every liberal is lining up on the side of death for Terri.

Still, since the hatred for the brothers Bush is so deep, this has all gotten lumped into partisan politics instead of just being an issue of human decency and rights. If Jackson's involvement helps Democrats in Florida feel like they help her without being traitors to their party, it will be a good thing.

Though it may be late in coming and while I'm no Jackson fan, this has been the only bright spot of hope in the last few days. We should at least be open to the possibility that it might spur an eleventh hour reprieve through a massive effort of both republican and democrat Floridians. I still pray for that.

Also -- and I say that as an evangelical rather than a Roman Catholic -- she has gotten some communions. If she is getting Christ in some supernatural way when she gets the Eucharist (I'm deliberately skirting details of the theology as to "how" here) then it might be possible to see a miracle.

Look out financial and "just the law" repubs..you may have made wayyyyy to much of an issue of telling half your party that Terri doesn't matter.

Now where is that cartoon making fun of all this...???

If the Rev. Jesse Jackson can pull this off and persuade
a couple (or more) Black senators to disregard the
media and do the right thing, thus giving Governor Bush
a bill to sign and save Terri's life, what a wonderful day
of shared rejoicing we can all have, and a great way
for all Americans to recognize what is in common in our
hearts!

--->> Jesse Jackson have gubernatorial aspirations, either Illinois or Florida?

you know, that sounds in the realm of the possible.

I'd guess his base is stronger in Illinois, but if he goes blaming Terri's death on Jeb Bush that could mean he is aiming for FL.

One, Terri probably cannot be brought back at this point.

Two, Jackson's involvement at absolutely the last minute reeks of insincerity and opportunism, knowing his record.

Three, I have nothing but contempt for these black senators who were supposedly swayed by this noxious radical. They didn't care about the specifics of this case, they didn't care about the public at large, they didn't care about judicial tyranny, but now they care about Terri because The Rev. told them to? Screw these people.

Four, this is probably a cynical attempt by Jackson to humiliate Jeb Bush, the President, and the Republican leadership in Congress. I don't blame the poor, desperate Schindlers for welcoming his assistance, but it infuriates me that this dirtbag -- who has nothing to lose with this grandstanding -- is making the Republican officials, who did have something to lose, look bad.

This is one more case of Republicans snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Terri will almost certainly die anyway. If she lives due to Jackson's interference, the wrong lesson will be taught to the public. The lines of ideology, which are a real part of this issue, will be blurred. One of the worst demagogues in American history, Jackson, will be vindicated, and good (though weak) people like the Bush brothers, will look pathetic.

Slam me all you want for politicizing a tragedy, but if we conservatives are to learn anything from this dog's-breakfast of a situation, we have to speak frankly about it. Nothing less will do. We owe it to ourselves, and to the many Terri's whom we will see in the future.

"I called JAckson's office to thank him -- (while saying I'm not a supporter!)"

I did the same. I had a little trouble finding a human to talk to in Chicago (apart from the sweet lady who answered the phone), so I called the Atlanta office. They seemed surprised to be called but happy.

he sorta lays the onus on Jeb to convince one more senator if I read it right! Strange.

I agree it's strange. IF it's true that they're 1 vote short, I wonder if it's a conservative and that's why Santorum's headed their way. Maybe it's someone Jeb already gave his best shot and they need a different approach.

Hello,

Most of my family on my husband's side (except my MIL and FIL), refer to TS as the "poor woman in a coma". They have bought this lie, as they are not the kind to research like we on FR do, and simply follow the MSM. I have been working on them re: this case, but they are hard to convince.

The MSM is partially to blame for this situation, as the have either intentionally or through laziness, completely misinformed the public about Terri,

Glad to be here, keep praying everyone, MOgirl
