Gonzales finds border issues a little personal

Gonzales finds border issues a little personal U.S. attorney general, a son of immigrants, will travel to Mexico By JUSTIN GEST Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle

WASHINGTON - Attorney General Alberto Gonzales says his family history will inform his approach to policy when he discusses border and immigration issues with Mexican officials this week.

Gonzales, a Houstonian who is the first Hispanic to serve as the nation's top law enforcement officer, is expected to meet with his Mexican counterpart, Rafael Macedo de la Concha, and President Vicente Fox on Wednesday in Mexico City. He also will meet with other Cabinet members.

"Relationships are important," Gonzales said in an interview. "I want to spend some time to get to know some of their leaders."

Justice Department officials said the visit will include discussions about drug trafficking, illegal immigration and border security.

Gonzales' parents were Mexican immigrants, and he says he pictures their faces and those of other immigrants he has met when he considers border control issues.

He emphasizes the need to facilitate movement by thousands of law-abiding Mexicans who cross the border each day for work.

Still, he insisted that his "own personal views, personal allegiances, and my loyalty to the president have to be set aside to support the law."

Gonzales backs White House policy to expand the U.S. guest worker program, which would legalize the status of some of the 10.3 million undocumented Mexican workers in the United States, a move that Fox has demanded for years, and some Republicans on Capitol Hill have decried.

Fox has spoken consistently in favor of full amnesty and against the construction of more walls along the U.S

I'm not getting a warm and fuzzy feeling about the AG after reading this article. Enforcing the law is more important than relationships, especially for the AG, IMHO.

Tough to accomplish anything if one doesn't understand the difference between right and wrong!

Send all the illegal immigrants home and close our borders. Evaluate, formulate a plan, execute plan for PROPER and LEGAL immigration = right

Allowing them to cross our borders illegally when you have the power and resources to stop them = wrong

Illegal immigration could end up being the hill on which President Bush's legacy is lost. And that is a shame because he has done so many good things for America.

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales says his family history will inform his approach to policy ...

This is the last thing we need in an AG.

This statement shows that Gonzales has preconceived biases about immigration policies at a time when many American cities are being overwhelmed with illegal immigrants. Any policy coming from his department must now be suspect.

He's taking after his boss in this regard, though.

So resign. We don't need someone whose personal feelings get in the way of protecting all Americans.

Either his parents were illegals and that's how he's identifying with these people OR he really doesn't give a rip about the laws of this country.

There were a few posts previous to his confirmation about his background and 'interests', but those got heavily flamed. Many preferred to ignore the facts and hope for the best. In the case of the Bush admin and illegals, the worst fears seem to be manifesting, however--the Bush admin intends to do as little as possible to stop the flood of illegals and will continue to try to legalize them. [If he can't before his term ends, look for a just-before-midnight mass amnesty executive order on January 19, 2008.]

Gonzales is card carrying member of LaRaza which stands for the "the race" in the matra "for our race(hispanics) everything, for everyone else nothing!". This is racist organization just like the KKK or black panthers. You can thank GW for splitting our party and allowing Hitlery to be elected in 08.

Note to GW - just like your old man huh?

"he has done so many good things for America"

You'll have to remind me again what has he done (other than take out Saddam which I agree with) for this country. As I remember he has limited our free speech, done nothing to stop abortion or innocent life (only talk), no marriage ammendment, expanded govt spending beyond belief, calls patriotic citizens protecting our border vigilantes while mexican gangs threaten to kill them. I could go on but its obvious this president is on the bottom of the list - just above Carter and Clinton. When Hitlery is elected in 08 you can thank GW.

Gonzales' parents were Mexican immigrants...

Since the word "immigrant" doesn't always mean "here legally", I have to ask, were his parents immigrants or illegal aliens?

Gonzales backs White House policy to expand the U.S. guest worker program, which would legalize the status of some of the 10.3 million undocumented Mexican workers...

What is going to happen to the undocumented Mexican workers whose status isn't legalized? Will he deport them?

Still, he insisted that his "own personal views, personal allegiances, and my loyalty to the president have to be set aside to support the law."

I'll believe it when (IF) I see it.

How did Carter accomplish granting amnesty to the men who dodged the draft during the Vietnam war? Was it by executive order?

The folks in D.C. should be mindful of what just happened in Kyrgyzstan, and remember that they work for us - or not if we so choose.
