Last year at this time the nation was convulsed by "The Passion of the Christ." This year we are convulsed by the passion of Terri Schiavo. We can debate the latter without referencing the former. We can ignore that both narratives revolve around an innocent victim whose life was judged expendable by those who found that life inconvenient. We can overlook the two stories' many parallels -- people of good will anguishing over what to do; hypocrites drunk with power committing evil under cover of "the law"; cowards washing their hands of another human's fate. We can ignore the heartbroken mother nearby, unable to comprehend her child's suffering and powerless to relieve it. Since Terri Schiavo isn't Jesus Christ, let's contemplate her story without discussing its religious symbolism. Let's consider it simply as a betrayal of what our civilization stands for.

He said on MTP, "These are very difficult decisions, but - of course, if you ask me what I would do if I was the Florida Legislature or any state legislature, I'd say that if somebody doesn't have a living will and the next of kin disagree on whether the person should be kept alive or that is whether food and water should be taken away and her life ended - that really the benefit of the doubt ought to be given to life."
It's a waste of time to plead to our Pub allies- we need help from the opposite side- who better than Joe-

"If Terri Schiavo could speak, would she say, "I thirst"? How could any human being -- like her, divinely endowed with inalienable rights -- deny her water and then use it to wash his hands?"
Well said.
We prayed over this on Friday evening, a group of us. One of the prayers lifted up was that Joe Lieberman would become disgusted by what we're seeing and decide to break away from the Dem caucus on filibustering judicial nominations, and take the few Democrats that have a conscience left with him. There clearly aren't enough values-oriented Republicans to do what needs to be done. This has to be a bipartisan effort.
The goats and the sheep are being separated. I hate to sound so apocalyptic, but it's so apparent that we're not going to be talking about politics in terms of Democrats and Republicans, but in terms of life and death.
I mean, let's be honest - has anyone had a meaningful conversation about social security reform in the past week?
Maybe you did, maybe you didn't. But when it comes down to it, we could have the best conservative fiscal policy in the world, but if we, as a party, don't uphold the sanctity of life with every last ounce of strength, we're nothing.
Peggy Noonan caught a lot of flack for her prescient piece on the importance of our GOP legislators and governors to drop whatever it was they were doing and make sure the Schiavo case didn't come to this...
Oh great, MSNBC has live video of the tsunami panic in Indonesia - does this qualify as news or entertainment to the general public?
Probably qualifies as a fund raising advertisment.
So .. you couldn't get the Bushes to break the law - so now you'll try Lieberman ..?? Brilliant!
Thank you for posting this excellent column. Ruth Ann Dailey is a very good writer and I imagine it must take a great deal of courage to think and write like this in such a liberal newspaper.
There's nothing illegal about the Fla legislature passing its own state law, today, in the next few hours, that would say that if their is no living will, and there is a conflict among the next of kin, the person should be allowed to live. That's Joe's position.
I am not a Democrat. But, my Cong. is Chris Shays. Who would you plead to help save Terri's life, lawfully?
The problem is that the Florida state legislature doesn't want to do this, and in fact last week voted down a bill (with the votes of a significant number of RINO's, such as Jim King) that would have protected Terri.
Hmmmm?? The last time I checked - Lieberman was a member of the FEDERAL Senate - not FL state senate - so I don't think he would have any authority there.
If you're just hoping that Joe can influence the FL state house - I can guarantee you - only his own home CT state legislators would probably even listen to him.
You might be better off to plead with Tom DeLay or Bill Frist - who are in support of saving Terri too.
Be informed that a built in contradiction in any logical system allows the proof of any theorem. See Bertrand Russel's proof he was the pope given the premise 1=2. The
"Law"is full of misusable contradictions. Common sense has been killed.
If this wasn't so sad it would be funny.
"Common sense has been killed"
Why do you say that ..??
Well .. your sentiments are nice, but "political cover" doesn't trump the rule of law - no matter how flawed the law may be (and I do agree this was a terrible miscarriage of justice). Janet Reno had political cover.
Just because Janet Reno was willing and able to subvert the rule of law - does not mean that it was right. Reno never got any flack over her subversion because the democrats supported what she did and they were the ones in power at the time - plus they don't support the rule of law - UNLESS IT AGREES WITH THEIR PHILOSOPHY. That's just wrong.
I believe Jeb Bush when he says that his heart is broken - but he cannot go against a court order.
