Confiscated Guns Melted

Mar 24, 2005 6:15 pm US/Eastern

COATSVILLE, PA (KYW) It was a murderous meltdown Thursday as more than 3,000 guns dissolved at more than 3,000 degrees in a steel plant furnace.

The move comes as CBS 3’s Walt Hunter reports officials turn up the heat in hopes of getting deadly weapons off Philadelphia’s streets.

Every kind of caliber, every type of crime, and many still marked with the blood of their victims.

The roar of the weapons brought violence and death to city streets but now, following the roar of a steel plant furnace, they are about to disappear.

From their storage place at the police evidence room, the weapons were moved in a truck caravan under the close watch of swat teams to the ISG Steel Plant in Coatesville

With furnaces heated to more than 3,000 degrees, once the guns were dumped into the flames, they were gone for good.

For officers who often risked their lives seizing the weapons and for workers feeding the fires, it was a satisfying day.

Hunter says that now the molten lava of the melted guns will quickly be transformed into steel plates to protect troops in Iraq.

pointless vandalism. Guns are literally being used as the scapegoat in a quasi religious ritual.

Sacrifice them, rather than have the guilty be punished as they deserve.

Fortuanately I have adopted 5 guns this year. They are now safe, redeemed from suffering for the sins of others. Some of them are over 100 years old, and I hope they continue to enjoy their "active retirement".

And today's magic word is 3,000. Three thousand! Can you say three thousand? Very good Diane. You should feel very proud and very special!

Wouldn't it be a delicious bit of irony if the steel from the guns were used in manufacturing components for SUV's?

Alternate headline:

CITY CARRIES OUT DEATH SENTENCE ON INANIMATE OBJECTS

Shepard Smith was reporting this story on Fox News the other day. He was reading the text of the article, about the guns that had caused so many problems. Suddenly he stopped, and very pointedly went back and said "Correction - it was the people who carried them who caused the problems." And I was on the other side of the screen giving him a big thumbs up and a hearty "GOOD JOB, SHEP!"

What a pointless ritual of symbolism. This did absolutely no good except as a propaganda stunt. On the other hand, I would say don't ever buy used guns anyways. Support the gun industry and buy new ones and increase production, instead of just recyling old ones on the market. Hell, keep your old ones or give them to family members or friends who could use a good firearm, then encourage them to go buy new firearms next time.

Figures, no mention of the individuals pulling the triggers.

The gun destroyers just don't get it. If the guns weren't destroyed, but instead sold to the public, the police departments would get revenue to use for law enforcement, and there would be less demand for the gun manufacturers to produce. It might result in a few companies folding. But nooooo. The gun destroyers keep reducing the available supplly of guns, thereby causing the gun manufacturers to keep producing to meet demand. Oh, and by the way, our taxes also get raised to cover costs of law enforcement.
