Like many women of a certain age, I have a bad habit, first learned in the 1960s and '70s. Whenever I'm in a professional setting, I count the number of women in the room. These days there are occasions when I don't have enough fingers and toes to do the job.
Which brings me to the present, and an ugly little spat that is roiling the waters of opinion journalism in the same way that Lawrence Summers's comments about the dearth of women in math and science rocketed through the academy. Op-ed pages, the accepted wisdom insists, don't carry enough articles written by women.
The definition of "enough" is unclear, but the implication is that the editors of the nation's major newspapers are derelict for not selecting opinion articles based on the gender of the writers. How gender is relevant when the subject is Social Security reform and the author is Martin Feldstein or Caroline Hoxby, both Harvard economists who write for the Journal, is anyone's guess. As a former op-ed editor, I always thought it was the intellectual content that mattered.
The current debate started when Michael Kinsley, editorial page editor of the Los Angeles Times, rejected an op-ed submission from Susan Estrich, onetime manager of the Dukakis presidential campaign, self-anointed feminist, and ever-ready TV pundit.

Does she gargle with razor blades?
Well, how else is a feminist like her going to get "anointed" unless she does it herself?
If you know what I mean.
DOH!
Someone on another Estrich-Ostrich thread said that she sounds like Carol Channing on speed! Fairly accurate, in my opinion.........or else, the woman grew up in a box full of male cats, until it was too late to correct the damage to her vocal chords.
Either Roger Ailes is hard of hearing, or he puts Estrich-Ostrich on FOX deliberately, to show liberals in the worst possible context.

What is the sound of two chalkboards mating?
Zen Mander
I think she suffered a mental breakdown Nov 2 when she realized the exit poll data was wrong and Frenchie was circling the drain. She ain't yet on the road to recovery obviously! Life is still good!
And to add: This was also after she "commanded" the Dems to "go mean". And they lost. Obviously, she's not learned from her own directive: She went Mean on M.Kinsley. I don't t'ink it is working for her, either...
